Lulu City was a nice hike on the West side of Rocky Mountain National Park. You hike up about 4 miles with little elevation gain alongside the Colorado River. I guess this is near the headwaters of the river, because it was a small stream at this point, and we weren't even aware that it was a mighty river a few more miles down! The hike is through forest the whole way, until you come out upon a clearing that the river flows through. That's it - Lulu City. We would have hiked right by it if there didn't happen to be a meeting of the Colorado Ghost Town Society there right as we walked up. They gave a very interesting speech about how the town grew up because of mining potential in the region, but lost all its inhabitants when the mines ran out. The reason there are no ruins or anything at the site is that the settlers came back and dragged out the logs to use on houses in other places. There are none left at the Lulu City site. If you hike near the river however, you might come across an old bear trap that is left over from those times. It is a large, sturdy cage with a gate that they would bait with meat. Legend has it that they caught a large bear, who tore his way out of the trap, losing his toe in the process. He had a distinctive footprint from then on, and was given the nickname, "Old Three-Toe". If you want an easy hike with some historical significance, and don't mind having no real panoramic views, this is a nice hike. |
