Our hike to Ouzel Falls was around December or January,
1997/98. It was just a couple of months before they made
that section of Rocky Mountain Park a fee
area. Apparently
now there is a ranger guardshack there year-round to collect
fees. This is a great hike to do on snowshoes. If you are good with backcountry skis, it would be good for this also; there are a few spots where it is fairly steep and narrow, though. It was not a hard hike at all, and only took a couple of hours to get to the falls. Be aware, however, that in winter, Ouzel Falls is almost unrecognizable - it looks like a steep, snowy hill. Here's a tip - if you hike just a few hundred yards past Ouzel Falls and turn around, you will get a great view of the valley that you just came up. Its a nice spot to sit and have lunch. For most of the hike, you are in the woods, which is great for shielding you from wind, but it kind of cuts off all of the panoramas. It is still a pretty hike the entire way, with lots of nice views of streams and trees laden with snow. I think in the summer, it would be an even faster hike, although a more crowded one. On a Sunday in the winter, we saw only 4 other people on the whole hike. |
