This is a great place for a first cross country/back country ski trip. If you take Route 40 off I-70 towards Winter Park, this place is a marked trailhead right across the street from the turn-in for the Winter Park ski area. You pull into the snow-filled parking lot, and off you go. Basically, there are several trails heading up the valley to the east, although you may find yourself breaking trail in places. It is very level, and you can stay on the valley floor the whole time if you want. After about a mile (?) you'll cross a north-south snowmobile road, and head further up the valley. Now you start to hit hills to the sides of the trail that you can switchback up and tele-mark down.
This place is normally not crowded, and great to bring a group of beginners. It's hard to get lost, since you would have to climb the side of the valley to get off-trail.
