 SAKAY

Buried under layers of official history written mostly by Americans, was the story of the war waged by Filipino revolutionaries who refused to yield to American soldiers, and preferred to carry into the 20th century their conflict with the Yankee agents of benevolent assimilation, who had considered them to be little better than the "vagamundos" who littered the highways and the haciendas after the defeat of the revolutionaries. Many of them, particularly in the Southern Tagalog region, adhered to a form of utopianism, which merged revolutionary icons and Christian metaphors in a syncretism active up to the formation of the Philippine Commonwealth and the first Constitution in the mid-1930, and in some mountainous parts up to today.

A barber and moro-moro performer becomes the new leader of the Katipuneros as the Americans complete their conquest of Asia's first republic.

1993 Manila Film Festival winner of the Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Award and Lingap ng Inang Maynila Award; Official entry of the Philippines to the 1994 Asian Film Festival in Singapore; Special Exhibitions to the 1995 Asian American International Film Festival in New York, Australian National University Film Conference at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney; and 1996 Filipino-American Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
