WORD BANK

 

      All the different types of sounds and words that have been mentioned can be found in the word bank. These words can be used in several ways. They can be printed on small index cards and used as drill cards. The same cards can be used with your favorite board game. Instead of using dice to indicate the movement of the players, the word cards can be utilized. On one side of the cards put the word, on the other side, make up a sentence using the word. Whatever sound you are working with at the time, include only those sounds.

 

For example: if you are working with SHORT A words,a sample card might look like the one below. Count the number of words on side two. This will determine the number of moves that the player will make. Vary the number of words per card and counting now becomes involved. Certain board games involve a great deal of counting, often up to 100. For younger children two skills will be attacked at the same time.

HERE IS AN IMPORTANT PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW WHEN YOUR CHILD CAN NOT READ A WORD. FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE AND BE SURE TO USE IT WITH EVERY WORD THAT GIVES YOUR CHILD DIFFICULTY. THIS WILL, IN TIME, GIVE YOUR CHILD A VERY IMPORTANT METHOD TO USE WHEN ATTACKING WORDS THAT HE OR SHE DOES NOT KNOW. WITH PRACTISE YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO USE THIS METHOD ON HIS OWN, AT SCHOOL, AND ELSEWHERE.BE SURE TO START THIS METHOD IN THE VERY BEGINNING WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO USE THIS MANUAL.

 

1. When your child is having difficulty with a new word ask 

     them to give you the vowel sound first.

2. Once they are sure of the sound then have them put the beginning consonant with the   

     vowel and sound out only this much of the word.

3.  Finally have them add the ending sound to the word and  pronounce the whole word.

     An example would be if they were having difficulty with the word CAT.

     I would ask them, "WHAT IS THE VOWEL SOUND"

     Make sure that they have it right because if they don't

     Then  they will need more work with the short vowel sounds.

2.  If they answer "AH" correctly then I would cover the T in

     the word cat and would only show them CA and I would ask

     them, "WHAT DOES THIS MUCH OF THE WORD SAY"

     I would be looking for them to say "CAH"

3.  Finally I would expose the whole word and have them say

     "CAT"

     Be sure to always use this method when attacking new words.

     In this way they will have a tried and tested method of

     unlocking new words. It must be practiced over and over before it becomes routine.     

     This cannot be emphasixed enough.
