Charlie Gauthier

Charlie Gauthier homesteaded the NW32-53-4-W5. He and his father were cutting hay around Goose Lake in 1904, and he said it was so dry they dug a well in the lake near the island and got enough water from it to water four head of horses once a day.
He and his wife moved onto the homestead in 1906, from their former home at Acheson, east of Spruce Grove.
They had four children, Lucy, Alice, Henry, and Archie. Napoleon being Mrs. Gauthier's son from a previous marriage. They also raised two adopted children, Rosie and Freddie.
Charlie served in World War I from 1914-1918 and he received a small disability pension.
Mrs. Gauthier served the area as midwife for a number of years. She made and sold many beautiful pairs of moccasins, gloves, mitts and many a beautiful beaded jacket.
The children attended school first at Rexboro and later at Darwell. They did most of their shopping at Wabamun.
Besides running a mixed farm, Charlie freighted from Edmonton to Jasper in the early days with horses.
Charlie passed away in 1956 at the age of 77. Mrs. Gauthier passed away in 1966 at the age of 87. Both are buried in the R.C. Cemetery at Lac Ste. Anne
