The Deputy Minister
of Education - Edmonton
Sir
Our Chairman has just shown me a letter from you dated March 15th. In reply, he wishes me to say that he intends visiting Mr. Astleford to-morrow, when the matter of the education of Mr. Astleford's children will be talked over, between them. If it is found to be possible for these children to get across to our School, we will do our level best to arrange it.
After our interview to-morrow I will send you the result. The Chairman wishes me to thank you for your letter
Yours respectfully

Sir
I wrote to you on Saturday. Our Chairman visited Mr. Astleford yesterday and thoroughly thrashed out this question. The ground was examined and it was proved to be impossible for Mr. Astleford's Children to be transported to our new School, 2 1/2 miles across country, owing to large Lake and unlimited muskeg,
Therefore, Sir, the matter is out of our hands, and for your consideration only.
From Mr. Astleford's to Smithfield School the distance is 4 miles, 3 of which is automobile road. From the same spot to our new School; the distance by a bad road (of, at least 3 miles) would be 5 miles.
Yours respectfully

Sir
re a matter of Assessment
NE36-53-4-5
This Homestead previous to 1916 was held by a H. Walker. The arrears had amounted to $20.00. On January 24th, 1916, Waide Walker filed on this Homestead, having cancelled his Brother-
So we lost this $20.00 -
In 1920, this Waide Walker owed $34.60 Tax Arrears. But last Fall Glen M. Walker cancelled his Brother Waide. So, we lost this $34.60.
$54.00 altogether, gone!!
Glen M. Walker, last Fall, then made application for this Homestead. Everybody knows this.
This Farm joins the Farm of Mrs. C.B. Walker, where signs of Oil have been discovered - Boring now going on. (end of p.78)
re a matter of Assessment
This year I assessed Glen Walker for this Farm - He appealed against Assessment on the ground that, at present, he is neither Owner or Occupier, not having, yet, heard from Ottawa.
Our Court of Revision instructed me to retain the Assessment, as it stands, on Roll but not, at present to send Tax Notice to Glen.
The information I ask for, Sir, is this. -
"if, any day, during 1921, I find that Glen M. Walker is accepted for this Homestead by the Dominion Government, can I immediately send to him a Tax Notice on the strength of our 1921 Assessment dated February 22nd?"
It is hard luck for our S.D.!!
We have received no School Taxes, whatever, from NE36-53-4-5 for 8 years.
Yours respectfully

Sir
By request of our Board I enclose copy of a letter I sent to the Education Department, on Oct. 29th
I also enclose the letter received from the Department, dated Nov. 3rd.
I am instructed by the Board to ask you to lend us, on Note, the sum of Three Hundred Dollars so that our Teacher can be paid. You will see that our new Building is entirely free from debt, and is insured in the "Beaver" Fire, with equipment, for $1250.00. I hold the Title Deed for this site
