The Manager
Royal Bank of Canada - Edmonton
Sir
I am to-day drawing a cheque on our a/c for $94.00 in favour of our Teacher. -
This will be full settlement with her, right up to October 31st, 1922. -
My Board wishes to operate the School until November 30th. Then close down for the Winter and re-open School next April. So, our Gov't Grant for this term (about $90.00) will be mortgaged to the Teacher. -
Our taxes are, practically, all paid up. Round $20.00 now stands to our credit, required for Official Salaries in December. My Board wishes to dig a Well. So, we want another $100.00. I tried the Department last Fall in order to pay the Teacher. - (end of p. 104)
2)
But the Department shunted me on to the Royal Bank track. And I see that, this year, they are prepared to shorten the Terms rather than loan money to S. Boards.
Are you willing for us to overdraw our a/c up to $100.00, we to pay you at the rate of 8% interest, up to next April? Will you please let me know as early as possible? We shall then know what to do, as to the Well. -
Yours respectfully

Sir
I thank you for yours of Feb. 6th. Upon receipt of it I was happy, thinking it was plain sailing. But Sylvan is always in trouble. I hate to be always troubling you and get quite angry with myself.
I at once, wrote off, enclosing Forms and stamped envelopes, to the 3 M.D. Secretary - Treasurer, also sending copies of your instructions to me. I have had a talk with our Chairman to-day. I, now, send to you, their answers, which kindly return to me.
I cannot assess fairly, with this information. As to the Morthern M.D. which contains the largest portion of our S.D., if we are compelled to wait until the beginning of June before issuing our Ass. Notices then the operation of our School is held up until next August, for no money will be available to pay a Teacher. (end of p. 107)
Then , as to Inga and Woodford M.D.s the Valuations are so varied and widely different that the whole thing becomes ridiculous: - for I must have the same Tax Rate all through.
Now, Sir, I am requested by our Chairman, to ask you, under these peculiar circumstances, to allow me either to make our own valuation or to assess acreage, as usual, just for one more year. -
It is the strong desire of my Board to re-open School April 1st. To do this, we must have new money in April. Therefore, I must get out the Assessment Notices, next week.
Yours respectfully

Sir
At Board Meeting, on the 6th -
Proposed by Trustee Kruse, seconded by Trustee McGuire and carried.
"That the School be re-opened on Tuesday April 6th and that the Department be requested to send us a Suitable Lady Teacher, Salary to be $4.00 each full Teaching day, when the School is operated, the light Janitors work to be part of the Teachers duties, Vacationone month, during July and August."
Will you, Sir, Kindly do this for us?
Either of the Trustees will board and lodge the Teacher. But, they consider it would be nice to have a Teacher, whose Mother could live with her, in the School House, if you know of such an one,-
Yours respectfully

Sir
I enclose Teacher Agreement, from March 1st.
You will notice that we have started School 2 months earlier than usual, risking the weather, which is, just now, very good.
Until we received the Special Gov't Grant, last year, we were always short of money, but now, with the extra $1.20 a day, we shall easily be able to pay the Teachers Salary, when due.
You will also notice that, if we can always operate the School, as in 1928, with the exception of the July 2 weeks rest, Sylvan School will be operated as long as any other School -i.e.10 months.
Yours respectfully
Thomas Street - Sec.
