EXTRACTS FROM A LETTER OF 5 SEPTEMBER, 2003:

*...this Wright line goes back to Deacon Samuel Wright of Northampton and Springfield, MA. You are also probably correct that the Deacon's parents were John and Margaret (Castell) Wright of the Havering/Wrightsbridge branch of the so called Kelvedon Hatch Wrights (Sir John Wright, Lord of Dagenham Hall & Wrightsbridge tollway, tannery & mill; White Notely Manor, Bishops Hall and Kelvedon Hall and other property in Brentwood, Havering and Rainham, arms granted June 6, 1509, by Henry VIII). However, you are probably wrong about the maiden name of Deacon Samuel Wright's wife, Margaret. She was not a Stratton. That is a very old speculation that was made in the Stebbin's genealogy that has taken on the air of fact....

**...The other issue with the Deacon's family is that I have come to believe that Hannah and Benjamin were not children of Deacon Samuel Wright. I believe they were perhaps niece and nephew or other relation entrusted to the Deacon's care for the settlement of Agawam, but not his blood children....

John Wright was a Greys Inn barrister who was appointed a subclerk of the House of Commons in 1612 and was that body's chief clerk by the time James I died. It was John Wright, as chief clerk, who caused the public eulogy of James I to be published on behalf of the House of Commons. His name is affixed to the bottom of the document.

The Deacon's elder brother, John Wright, followed in their father's footsteps and became a barrister and clerk of the Commonwealth era House of Commons by 1644. The Deacon could boast of the right to bear a family coat of arms and support from powerful family members back in England, both of which advantages seem to have mattered little to him. His Puritan religious temperament seems to have been rigid enough that the rough, simple life on the frontier was what suited him best....
