| A best friend's love I ran to the entrance ramp with uncontained excitement. Today was the day! Lord Dilandau, feeling rather generous, had proclaimed that we Dragonslayers deserved a reward, and he said that we may have a guest on the Vione for a week. We had thanked him profusely, and jumped for joy at the thought of seeing people we hadn`t seen in months. I immediately knew who I was going to invite. It was obvious to me. My best friend Sunseria. We had known each other all our lives, and every year my love for her had grown. I had plans this week to finally announce my emotions and--this thought still made me nervous--ask her to be my girlfriend. So as I ran to greet her, you could understand my excitement. There she was. In the months I hadn`t seen her, her shimmering black hair had grown much longer and now reached below her waist, and she had also grown a couple of inches. She looked up, her beautiful green eyes met mine, and she smiled. ``Migel!``she shouted. She ran to me and threw her arms around me. I returned the hug. ``Oh, it`s so great to see you! I`ve missed you so much, the days have been so boring without you around to get us into trouble!`` ``I missed you too, Sunseria. Come on, I want you to meet my friends.`` I walked her over to the other Dragonslayers, who were also busy with friends and family. ``Chesta, Dalet, Gatti, Guimel, Viole, this is my best friend, Sunseria,``I said. She shook hands with all of them and smiled. ``So you`re the ones who have spent the last seven months with Migel. Boy do I feel sorry for you,``she laughed. I pretended to be insulted. ``Oh, really? Well, if I were them, I`d feel more sorry for you,``I said, and started tickling her. She squirmed out of my grasp and ran away, taunting me with her giggles. ``So how are the reunions going-OOMPH!`` I started. Lord Dilandau had entered the room, and Sunseria had run right into him. She lay now on the floor, still laughing. My lord looked down and noticed her. ``Here, let me help you up,``he offered, stretching out his hand. She took it and he pulled her to her feet. ``Well, now, who are you here with?``Dilandau asked. ``I am Sunseria, and I am Migel`s best friend,``she said.``Pleased to meet you.`` ``The pleasure is all mine, Sunseria.`` He knelt and kissed her hand, and I felt myself flinch. He straightened up, and looked at the rest of us. ``Well, now, my loyal slayers, don`t stand around. Show your guests to their rooms.`` He turned and left the room, and I noticed Sunseria`s eyes followed him. I felt my heart sink. Oh no, please tell me she doesn`t like Lord Dilandau. ****************************************************************************** After Sunseria had gotten settled, I took her on a tour of the Vione. She especially loved the guymelefs, and I promised to teach her how to pilot one. As we were walking out of the hangar, we ran into Lord Dilandau. ``Hello, sir,``I said. ``I suppose you`re taking your guest on a tour of the surroundings, Migel?``he asked. ``Yes, sir.`` ``And do you like our guymelefs, Sunseria?`` ``Oh, very much, Lord Dilandau.`` ``Would you care to have a look at mine? It`s the very best one we have,``he said. Sunseria grinned. ``I`d be honored, sir.`` I felt quite let down as she walked away, calling out only, ``See you later, Migel!`` ****************************************************************************** Sunseria and Dilandau didn`t return until very much later. I saw my chances of ever being with her slipping further away with each passing minute she spent by my master`s side. But what was I to do? I couldn`t interfere, if she was happy that was all that mattered. When she finally returned, she was bubbling over with excitement. ``Wow, you`re so lucky to be under Dilandau`s command! He`s such a nice guy!`` I sighed. ``I suppose you fancy him then, Sunseria?``I asked. She gave me quite a coy look. ``Now, why would you think that? I only just met him. Jealous, are we?`` She had hit the nerve. I never could hide anything from her. But for once, I had to try. ``Of course not, Sunseria. I just think you and Lord Dilandau would make a good couple,``I said, the words sending spasms of pain through my mind. She smiled, and turned to my mirror, humming and fixing her hair. It was as if I didn`t exist. And maybe I didn`t, not in the way I wanted to. I rolled over onto my bed, and fell into a restless sleep, not even noticing as she left the room in a happy stupor. ****************************************************************************** I think the next couple of days are a blur. They should have been the happiest days of my life, but Sunseria was spending nearly all of her time with Lord Dilandau. The only real time I got alone with her was when giving her piloting lessons. She actually had quite a knack for handling guymelefs, and I think she would have been a very tough opponent in battle. On the fourth day of her visit, a horrible accident happened. As she was exiting the guymelef, she tripped and fell. I ran to catch her, but all I managed to do was cushion her head before she hit the ground. ``Are you ok, Sunseria?``I asked, panicking at the thought that she could be seriously injured. She groaned. ``Oh, man, I`m ok, don`t worry...nothing some ice won`t fix.`` I gently picked her up and headed down to the infirmary with her. Of course, we had to meet up with Lord Dilandau. ``Oh my, Sunseria, are you ok? Here Migel, let me carry her to the medical officer. You can go make her bed comfortable for when she returns,`` he said. I seethed inwardly at being shrugged off, but I handed Sunseria over and left, my head hanging low to hide the pain in my eyes. ****************************************************************************** Finally, the end of the week came. Lord Dilandau had decided to hold a huge dance for all the Zaibach soldiers, including of course the Dragonslayers and their guests. I tried to be excited, but how could I? Tonight was my last night to see Sunseria, and she looked to be falling in love with Lord Dilandau. The thought saddened me as I dressed myself for the event. I entered the huge room where combat practice was usually held, and stared at the magnificent decorations. The entire area was dressed in silvery blue and white, with violet lighting and bright music playing in the background. I looked around, and the sight coming to meet me took my breath away. Sunseria walked towards me, wearing a light blue dress tnhat perfectly matched the surroundings. For the first time in my life, I saw her with makeup, and I was starstruck. She looked so beautiful. Just as she reached me, a slow melody began, and couples took to the floor. ``May I have this dance, Sunseria?``I asked shyly. ``Of course, Migel.`` I took her in my arms and swayed gently to the rhythm of the music, aware of nothing but the warmth of her body pressed against mine, and the feel of her head resting on my shoulder. I could have stayed in this moment forever. But it was not to be. I felt a tap on my shoulder. ``May I cut in, ``came the voice of Lord Dilandau. I reluctantly acknowledged, and stepped back to let him dnace with her. When the song ended, I saw him take her hand and lead her out to the balcony of the Vione. Knowing full well what was about to happen, and how much it would hurt me, I still sneaked up to the balcony entrance, and listened in to their conversation. ``Sunseria...I`ve never felt this way about a girl before...will you go out with me?``came the voice of Lotrd Dilandau. I looked at them, and saw his face moving ever closer to hers, so close...I couldn`t stand it anymore. I turned and ran, tears stinging my eyes. I didn`t even know where I was headed, but I somehow reached my room. I lied down on my bed, and let my tears fall. What was I thinking, what chance had I against Lord Dilandau? And why didn`t I realize that she was so beautiful, obviously someone would make a move on her? ``Why didn`t I tell Sunseria?``I sorrowed to myself. ``Why didn`t you tell me what?``spoke the sweet melodic voice of my best friend. I looked up into her twinkling green eyes in shock. ``Why aren`t you with Lord Dilandau? I thought you two were, well, you know....``I stopped, unable to say it. ``Dating? No...he did offer, but well, I kinda have someone else in mind,``she said. I hung my head, still sad. ``Oh...I see...well, good luck with whoever it is,``I said. She tilted my face up. ``Who do you think it is, Migel?`` I looked closely into her green eyes, and I couldn`t stand it any longer. I slowly leaned forward, and brushed my lips against hers like I had been longing to do for years. To my joyful surprise, I felt her respond. I wrapped my arms around her and ran my fingers through her hair, and our kisses grew more passionate. I gently laid her down on my bed, and smiled at her. ``I love you, Sunseria. I`ve loved you always, and I want to know, will you go out with me?``I asked her. `` Do you have any idea how long I`ve wanted you to say that?``she said. I grinned, and leaned down to kiss her again. I felt a rush of emotions I`d never felt before, and I felt as though I could burst with love. Her hands brushed my hair as we lay there, kissing passionately. Finally, we stopped, and she fell asleep in my arms. I smoothed her hair, and felt extremely happy. I had my best friend`s love, and she had mine.
