Mutant Chronicles:

Doom Troopers

When I first got this game, I was really hyped about playing it but at the same time felt a pang of dread over how much my friend Tyler said it was dumb. After playing it, however, I thought he deserverd a kick in the balls. Simply put, the game rocks.

It allows you to pick one of two different characters to play the game, each having their own weapon and weapon specials. For instance, one of the two characters uses an insanely big assault rifle, and his weapon specials are normal and homing grenades.

Gameplay was realitively simple. Move with the directional pad, jump with b, shoot with y, special with x, and aim with r. Nice and simple. Makes my N64 games look far more complicated than they need to be, actually...no wonder it took me so long to get used to that goddamned controller!!!

It also has pretty fair customisability, considering how hard the game can get (although on two players, my friend Dave and I had it rocked on the hardest difficulty level because we were just good) at the highest difficulty level.

Graphically, for an SNES game, it looked superb, on par with Killer Instinct and Donkey Kong Country. The game also featured an incredible amount of gore, considering it only had a Teen rating...not that that stopped me from playing it. In case you haven't noticed, most of my games bear the annoyng M-17 rating. Meh. Actually, it's really cool when you blow the green ogry idiot's head off, and blood spurts from its neck a la Mortal Kombat, and then it starts shooting at you...a la something totally different.

Sound was also excellent, I especially loved the weapon and explosion sounds, as they were nice and loud. Music was also very good, very well done.

The only beef I have with this game is that it is SO damned short. It had 8 levels, with a boss ever two, and although the bosses were really cool...well...it just wasn't enough. I could beat the game in half an hour it was so short.

Aside from the length issues of the game, Doom Troopers is a solid action title for the SNES. The graphics are decent, the sound, music, and gameplay rock, and some of the effects are simply cool. Although this is not necessarily a game for the gentle of heart, I would suggest you try it anyway, because the only thing that can compare is Contra III.
