Final Fantasy III/VI
Yes, I do in truth own one of the most coveted games on the SNES…and I'd bought it refurbed. The Schwartz, of course, was with me at that moment in time. I'd rented it once, and then the place I'd rented it from (Rogers Video in Collingwood, I believe…maybe it was One-Stop Video…) sold it shortly thereafter. Pricks. Anyway, I only got about 1/3 of the way through it (just got into the World of Ruin, aka WOR), and then I had to take it back (took me a week), then the store sold it, and until 1998 I was walking in a void looking for it…and renting other SNES titles to pass the time…lots of RPG's…anyway, in 1998, Rogers got a refurbed copy, and I was in the store when it came in, so I snatched 'er up for 20 bucks, brought 'er home…and stayed in my room for about 2 months straight.
Graphically, the game looks pretty good for an SNES game, but not as good as Chrono Trigger (not like I care, CT was not nearly as good as FF3/6 IMHO). Colours are nice, bright and vibrant, and the backgrounds are awesome, as well as the animations of the higher level spells (I love the animation for Ultima and that fire spell that hurts everyone and everything :p) and the summons graphics were superb (for that era and gaming system). My personal favourite is still Bahamut's Solar Flare because it was nice and simple, but still looked really cool. Crusader was also awesome to look at.
Gameplay was, more or less, the same as all of the Final Fantasies before it besides 3 and 5 with a few alterations to the spell system as well as using the summon system, which is greatly improved from FF4. The alterations to the spell system was that EVERYONE could use any and all of the spells by "absorbing" them from the Espers (which are part of the summon system…bear with me hear, I will elaborate), and then after they're fully "absorbed", can be used at your leisure.
Espers are gems that contain Esper souls (an Esper is a magical being), and they have their own magical spheres of influence, and therefore you learn the spells that are associated with the esper when you equip it. You can also summon them once per battle, and they'll hit the enemy with a very powerful attack or aid your party in some form or another.
Combat is real-time making use of an options menu, so it's quite simple and very user friendly. Also, the item system is not as limited as 4's was (you can pretty much fit whatever you want in your "bag"), and it's a lot more organised, and even has a built in organiser. Woohoo!!!
Also, some characters have special abilities, such as Cyan with his sword techniques, Locke, who's able to steal, and Shadow who has a vicious counter-attacking dog and can throw shurikens as well as other weapons (Imp Halberd's my fave to throw…9999 damage all the way…YEEEAAAAHHH), and there are characters with other…unique abilities. There are, in total, 14 different characters, 3 of those being hidden characters. Gotta catch 'em all…Oy, that did not sound good…
There is also still a travel mode, the airship prevails yet again…twice. Oh how I love my airship!
Music was amazing for its time. Actually it was very similar to some of FF VI's (mountain theme specifically), but the fight and boss music was original, and very well done. But hey, this is Final Fantasy, right?
The only beef I had with it was at the end of the game, you're just kind of wandering through limbo. You know what you need to do and where you need to go…but being level 50…hell, level 60, won't cut it. Well…it will…but you want all the spells and what-not…especially Ultima, and that certainly takes time.
The other great thing about this game is its length. First time through, the game took me 60 hours to beat, although I've halved that now. There's a lot of story to it as well, which gives the game much added depth. Furthermore, there are lots of side-quests and plenty of standard quests to keep you not only busy, but happy for at least a month.
Decent music, graphics, and simply awesome gameplay make Final Fantasy 3/6 one of the best games ever to come out for the SNES and it kicks Chrono Trigger's ass. Period. The spell and summon system is very cool, but nothing at all confusing, and the combat system with the character perks is just very cool, especially with the Street Fighter-ish Blitz Attacks that Sabin has. Get this game, either the cart or the ROM, or you will be a loser for all eternity…whether or not you believe otherwise.
