Super Mario World

Of all of the Super Mario games besides Super Mario RPG and the original Super Mario Brothers (the one in the pipes with the POW button…yeah, you know what I'm talking about) this one is my favourite so far…but the again I haven't play Super Smash Brothers so I may just have to give that a go sometime. It's bright, colourful, maintains much of its classic elements, and also adds many new things, too.

Graphically, I think this is still one of the best for the SNES. Yes, I have played Star Fox, Vortex, and Doom (the only games I can recall that use the FX, and graphically, the latter two looked like shit) for that system, but they don't compare because the lack the simplicity and the colour depth. Obviously, SMW is going to be a very bright game, because it's a light-hearted one. Even for an early game though, the graphics are simply excellent.

Gameplay for SMW is pretty much the same as every other goddamn Mario Brothers game besides Mario RPG, the N64 games, the Gamecube games, and the original arcade game with the plumber clearing the levels of monsters of all sorts. Pretty much, jump on the bad mushrooms, eat the good mushrooms, Fireflowers, and feathers (which give you the cape, which also allows you to fly, dive-bomb, and do all sorts of other cool stuff), and teach Bowser and his kin why they shouldn't have fucked with you those first three times…Obviously they need it beaten, burned, and kicked back into their thick skulls…

The stages are all pretty much like Mario 3's, except that they aren't all that…annoying. Also, although the game is composed of 8 levels, almost all of them are in one whole surface-world, so you can go back and forth between areas with ease, in case you missed something. Quite convenient. The warping is also now controlled by the Warp Road, which if you complete all the puzzles, will allow you to access all the areas of game. Great for getting around as quickly as possible.

The game also features a save feature, which adds to the ease, but considering the size of the game, its practically necessary for all of those neophyte gamers out there.

Of the Super Mario adventure games, I would say this one is by far the best. It actually does appeal to gamers of all levels of patience (therefore all age ranges), unlike the rest, and has excellent replay value thanks to its numerous but simple puzzles and many secret areas. Nintendo actually did it right with this one. Unlike…ya know, most of the later games by Nintendo. Damn good thing they have those 3rd party publishers…
