Turok:
Rage Wars
I was told that this game was absolutely awesome. I'd no clue how awesome until I tried it though, and I was told by many a friend who owned either an N64 or a PSX to check it out. So I did.
Let's start off with gameplay. Nice and simple, with similar controls to the other Turok games with one slight variation: Secondary Fire mode. Hell yes. Some range from relatively interesting, like impact-explosion grenades (as in the hit any surface and they detonate) to the all-out cool, like the Minigun's shield, which makes you invulnerable to attack so long as you have energy ammo to power it. There are also numerous game modes, such as CTF, Frag Tag (Tag the Monkey…TOUCH MY MONKEY!!!…ummm…yeah), and standard and team deathmatch. There is also an interesting single and two-player campaign mode that requires you to complete certain tasks with certain restrictions (the restrictions being the number of lives you have to complete the task).
Bugs. They are very few, and I've only found one. And it's a doozy. It prevents you from completing the two player campaign. The bug is team frag-tag, and does not allow you to win. It works fine in multi, bots or no, but not in 2-player mode. Not that anyone actually cares, which is why this bug can be overlooked.
Bots and AI is interesting. AI being, of course, how hard your enemies are. The harder they are, the better they dodge, and the more accurate they shoot. Standard bots, right? Not exactly. Depending on the skins you assign the bots, you may be in for one hell of a wild ride…You do not want to be fighting both Tal-Set and Bastille (arguably the two hardest skin personalities in the game) unless you're a really good gamer. But the other two bosses, Symbiont, and what's-her-face (I forgot, so sue me) are a breeze. Unless you're in single player, of course…So yes, there are not only different skins, but personalities that go with them, too.
The levels are short, frantic, and the level themes are very solid. In other words, a level will have a stone theme, and it will stick to it all throughout. The design is also excellent, allowing for ambushes, sniping, you name it. So, it's not just a camper's paradise, it'll work for whatever your play-style is. The graphical detail is also excellent, despite the fact that it is a deathmatch game, and the lighting is also very good, with adequate shading where needed.
T:RW is by far one the coolest Arena-Deathmatch games to come out since XS for the PC. It combines fast frantic play with huge weapons, lots of skins, good bot AI (for those that go for bots), and multiple playmodes that make it the adult partygame of choice. I would say it is better than Goldeneye's multi, and there are many who would argue me, and they're all wrong, because most of those people play Q3A. I swear it.
