Robocop
Versus
The Terminator
This was one of the first games I rented for the SNES when my dad first got it. Of all of the action games I'd ever played at that time, let alone Robocop games, this one left me quite surprised, in good way.
Graphically, this is actually a rather polished game, despite the fact that it was also an earlier release for the system. It also maintained its closeness both Robocop and Terminator series by keeping the atmosphere dark, moody, and quite violent. In otherwords, despite the "K-A" (modern-day rating equivalent is "E"…but then again, do I really give a shit? No.) rating, this really was not a game for kids.
Story-wise, it's kind of interesting. See, Skynet's through with John Connor. It would rather cut its losses while it can, and find alternative means of fucking over the human race. See, that's why you don't putz around with artificial intelligence!! Anyway, Skynet sends the Terminators back in time to capture you and plug you into a computer, why I forgot. Anyway, whether or not they succeed is irrelevent (they do, by the way), because you have to somehow kick Skynet's ass. You'll get your chance after you get plugged into the computer (actually, you do it yourself by accident…some detective), and after the humans have been put under the tyranny of the cyborgs. So, the game takes place in two worlds. Yours, and theirs.
Gameplay is relatively simple. Shoot, jump, duck, climb…basic action game controls. However, there's also some cool stuff that you get, although not until the future where you'll pick up the plasma cannon/grenade launcher combo, which gives you a secondary firemode. I've rarely played a game that actually had that, and if it did it was for the Genesis…if I did. Not bloody likely, though. And, as I said earlier, the game takes place in two worlds, yours (which looks like an urban hellhole) and the Future (which looks like an industrial hellhole…). In your world, the game is realtively easy, and short. I think there's only 4 levels. Regardless, it's actually quite cool. Plus you get to use the ED-209's dual .50 machine cannons. In the future, you fight cyborgs with an attitude. You even fight an Eradicator tank (the huge tanks from the two Terminator movie intros), and that's one bitch of a boss to fight, I know!! There are also hunter-killers, more terminators, and some other stuff I've forgotten because life's like that.
There are many good action titles on the SNES, and I'm thankful that this is one of them. The action was frantic, the guns were big, and the atmosphere was just right. One of the best action titles I've ever played. You go play, NOW!!!
