Tin Can
When
I was working on a project, I needed a shiny tin can and couldn't
find
one. So I made my own and thought I would share how I did it.
This tutorial is done in PSP 7.02. Without the use of any outside filters.
Remember to save
your work often. Open a new, 400 X 400 ,
16 million colors, transparent
background. Name this
layer Can. Click on yourpreset
shapes / rectangle /
retain style and create as vector
NOT checked. Antialias Checked.
with your fill on metallic gradient
Draw a rectangle.
Make sure that your can is CENTERED.
What I sometimes do (if I can't find the
center points) is copy and paste
as a new. Go to Image/ Canvas Size, making sure that
center image horizontally and vertically
are checked, and make the canvas
the oringal size you were working
on. Now your work will be centered.
Now click on your selections tool
with Circle selected, antialias checked.
Starting at the center just above
your can, make a circle and drag it down
to the bottom of the center of
the can.
close up shot
Next click somewhere on the can to make it selected.
Next go Selections / Invert.
Then Edit / Cut . This will cut the points
off the edges of the can and
make it rounded.
Now go to Effects / Artistic
/ Chrome
I used these settings,
Flaws 2
Color lt. Grey Brightness 100
Feel free to play around till
you find the look you like.
Select None and Add another layer.
Name this layer Inside.
Click on the Preset Shapes /
Elipse ... with Vector checked.
Use the same settings as before
with the gradient / Invert Checked.
Streatch or Shrink the elipse
to fit the can. Convert to Raster.
Add another layer name it Edge.
Click on the Inside layer, draw a rectangle
around it and click on the Inside
Elipse to select it.
Now go to Selections / Modify
/ Expand by 3 or 4 pixels (depending on
how thick you want your ridge
to look).
Click on the Can Layer and then
Add another layer and name it Ridge.
This layer should be on top
of the can, but under the Inside Layer. Click on your
Flood Fill tool and Fill the
Ridge layer with the Metallic Gradient
the Invert not Checked on the
Gradient.
Then I added a cutout with the
above settings:
Vertical 0 Horizontal
-2
Opacity 100
Blur 6.3
Add a new layer and name it ribs.
Click on the Preset Shapes
Starting at the left of the can
draw you ring off to the right of the can.
Click on the Selection tool
and draw a rectangle around the top
portion of the ring. Go to Edit
/ Cut to remove the top part of
the ring. Use the mover
tool to position your rib into place. Then
copy and paste as a new selection
lining them up with spaces
between the ribs. Keep
doing this till you have the number of
ribs that you want on your can.
When you have the number of
ribs in place that you want,
Click on the can layer, draw
a rectangle around it, then click on the can.
Go to Selections / Invert ,
then click on the rib layer on your layer
palatte. Go to Edit /
Cut .
Click on your rib layer draw
a rectangle around it to select the ribs. Go to
Effects / 3D / Cut Out and apply
the same settings as above. Then slide the
Opacity bar to about 35 percent.
Now you can delete the background
layer (if you have one),
Merge Visible and resize (if
you want) and export as a tube.
I hope that you enjoyed making
the can.
