Amanda Coetzer has taken over from Sanchez Vicario has the best retriever in the game. Her speed and fitness are superb. Coetzer plays with extreme topspin. Her weakness is her lack of aggression. She often waits too long for her opponent to miss. Her actual volley is a good shot, however, she can play too many matches when she does not come to the net during her matches.

1998

Coetzer blew big leads (in one match) to doubles partner, Huber at the Australian Open. She led 6-2 4-1 with a double break, and 6-2 4-6 4-1 with a double break only to lose 2-6 6-4 7-5. The standard was very low as she plummeted to a fourth round loss. Coetzer beat Spirlea 6-3 6-4 in the final of Hilton Head to win her first title of the year. Martinez beat her in the semi final of the Ameila Island. Coetzer fell to Schynder in the opening round of the French Open 8-6 in the final set. She fell to Sawamatsu in 3 sets at Wimbledon. Coetzer scored an upset win over Martinez to reach the quarter finals of the US open.

1997

Coetzer caused a huge upset in beating Graf 6-2 7-5 in the sweating summer of the Auststalian Open. She reached the Semi finals for the second year in row, losing to doubles partner Pierce. Her clay court form was excellent beating Sanchez Vicario at Hilton Head, Novotna and Fernandez at Ameila Island, Graf at the German Open. Coetzer's defeat of Graf was her worst ever hiding, 6-0 6-1. At the French she beat Martinez for the first time in 10 clashes. She trailed a set and 1-4, before she came back to win 6-7 6-4 6-3. Coetzer, beat Graf 6-1 6-4 in the Quarter Finals, the third win over Graf for the year. Majoli beat her 4-6 6-3 7-5 in a nervous match which both had numerous opportunities. Coetzer played nearly 30 tournaments for the year winning 2 of them at Sush and Shusjs. She finished the year ranked 4.

1996

Coetzer beats Hingis to reach the Semi finals of the Australian Open, losing to Huber. She had a steady French Open making the round of 16. At Wimbledon she loses a close match 7-6 2-6 6-3 to McGrath, who went on to the semi finals Coetzer defeated Spirlea to reach the Quarter Finals of the US Open.

1995

The Canadian Open was Coetzer's best tournament of the year beating Graf (for the first time 3-6 6-2 7-6), Pierce and Novotna to reach the final. She lost to Seles, in her first tournament of her comeback. The tournament helps a ranking slump of 23 to be inside twenty, Coezer's performances at the slams were bad as she failed to reach the round of 16 in any of them. She lost in the third round of the Australian Open to Fernandez and to Sabatini at the French. At the US Open Coetzer nearly beat Graf as she won the 1st set and came back from 1-5 in the 3rd set to lose 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 6-4.
