Arantxa Sanchez Vicario

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Jana Novotna were a pretty good doubles combination as they won two slams. However, their partnership split in 1996 and they had a media fight during Wimbledon '97. Novotna criticised Sanchez for questioning ridiculous calls. She also attacked her game, saying that Arantxa doesn't do anything with the ball, she just hits it back and waits for her opponent's error. Sanchez responded in saying the Jana has not won any slams so she has no right to complain about a 3 time champion.

Sanchez Vicario is not really friends with the other players because she argues calls childishly. She also uses a lot of gamesmanship, where she tries to intimidate her opponents with death stares. She also tries to intimidate linesman by question a lot of calls. Her mother does not miss anything during her matches, and she can be seen hanging over the fence during big matches Arantxa plays.

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario has guts and has won many matches of her big heart as she really wants to win. Sanchez has loopy groundstrokes topspin, she also uses slices as well. She rarely flattens out the ball on her shots. Her volleys are superb as she has won numerous doubles titles. She is possibly the best counter puncher in the game, as she cannot attack very well. Her serve is light, meaning attackable.

1998

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario won her third French Open by defeating Serena Williams, Davenport and an in form Seles to take the second slam of the year. Sanchez won the title in Sydney at the beginning of the year limiting the Williams sisters to 9 games between them in the latter rounds to take the title. Huber powered past Sanchez at the Australian Open 7-6 7-5 in the quarter finals. Sanchez misses six weeks due to a thigh injury. She continues to have solid performances where loses to Kournikova in the semi finals of the Lipton prove her undoing. Sanchez fell to Hingis 6-3 3-6 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, after reaching the final of Eastbourne. Sanchez beat Kournikova for the first time at the US Open, and took the first set of Venus 6-2. Williams won their quarter final in 3 sets.

1997

Sanchez Vicario had a very poor year, which she failed to win a tournament. Her ill-form started at the Australian Open where van Roost won a tight match, 1-6 6-4 8-6. Schynder and Pierce thrashed her 6-2 6-1 in separate matches. Hingis thrashed her 6-2 6-2 in the quarter finals of the French Open. Her form improved over the grass season as she made the final of Eastbourne. The final against Novotna was washed out by rain. She reached the Semi Finals of Wimbledon where Novotna won a spiteful match in two sets. Sanchez's ranking slipped out of the top ten for the first time in eleven years. She fell to Hingis at the US Open quarter final stage. In Philadelphia, she beat Coetzer 6-1 6-2 and fell to Hingis in a tight match 1-6 7-6 6-3.

1996

Sanchez Vicario beats Novotna to reach the final of the French Open. She served for the title twice against Graf, however, she gallantly lost 6-3 6-7 10-8. This loss affected Sanchez and she played poorly in the Wimbledon Final. Sanchez lost to Rubin 6-4 2-6 16-14 in a terrific display of determination in the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open. She also played a tough match in the Quarter Finals of the French Open, where she beat Habsudova 6-2 6-7 10-8. She won two titles on clay, at Ameila Island and Hamburg, defeating Martinez 6-0 in the 3rd set of the latter event. She finished the year ranked 3, after falling to Hingis in fourth round at the US Open.

1995

Sanchez Vicario reached the first three Slam finals of this year. By making the Aussie final, she recorded enough ranking points to be ranked No 1. At this stage she was also the top player in doubles. She fell in three sets to Graf at the French Open. In the Wimbledon final, Sanchez came very close to snatching the title. She pushed Graf to 5-all in the 3rd set before a 20 minute game turned the match, in which Graf won 4-6 6-1 7-5. During the latter half of the year Sanchez's form dropped, falling in the opening rounds of numerous tournaments. She finishes the year ranked 2 behind Graf and Seles who are both co-ranked Number 1.

1994

Sanchez Vicario enjoyed her most successful year in which she won eight titles. After defeating Maleeva, Fragniere and Sabatini she was blown away by Graf in the Australian Open final. However, Sanchez busted a 44 match winning streak of Graf, by saving match points in a three set win in Hamburg. She quietly moved through the draw of the French Open and won her second title with victory over an in-form Pierce. Sanchez Vicario fell in round of 16 at Wimbledon. She defeated Graf at the Canadian Open as well as the US Open, to take her second slam of the year. Although Graf finished the year ranked 1, Sanchez won more titles, more slams and received the player of the year awarded by the International Tennis Federation. She also took out the US Open doubles title with Novotna.

1993

Sanchez had a very consistent year in which she finished ranked 2. She reached three slam semi finals of the Australian, French and US Opens. She won numerous titles including Hamburg, the tournament in which Seles was stabbed. Sanchez Vicario defeated Fernandez, Novotna, Maleeva in the slam tournaments, yet she lost to her doubles partner, Sukova, at Wimbledon and the US Open. This doubles combination took out the US Open stopping Zvereva and Gigi Fernandez from obtaining the Grand Slam. Sanchez also won the mixed doubles title with Woodbridge at the French Open.
