Jim Courier |
|
Jim Courier used to have a very serious attitude. He was solely focused on tennis and he was the top player in the world for 18 months. Critics labelled him boring as they wanted the top player to have more charisma. Nowadays he is more of a happy person and a very good drummer. He often plays his instrument in tour parties. In his hey day, he would not have attended such parties.
Jim likes baseball and often plays in baseball type shirts, for example the '93 Aussie Open. His backhand is similar to a lefthand baseball swing. This shows his talent as he could have easily played professional baseball.
Jim comes from a small town in the USA called Dade City, Florida.

Jim produces terrific groundstrokes, with power and topspin. His serve is technically incorrect as he stands with his feet close together and he doesn't have a proper backswing. His serve is effective as his physical strength powers it through. He likes to camp in the backhand corner and try to hit lots of forehands. He is a work horse and often wears his opponents out. His Florida base allows him to deal with extreme heat during matches.
1998
Courier missed the Australian Open due to injury. He played in the Davis Cup and he won the tournament in Atlanta beating his old foe, Chang, in the final. Courier has been disappointing compared to his early 90's form. He fell in the second round at the French Open and opening round of Wimbledon.
1997
Courier won in Doha, beating Bruguera in the final. He struggled through the rounds of the Australian Open to reach the round of 16. He also won the title in Los Angeles, beating Enqvist in the final. The year was a rather poor year in which he fell in the opening round of the French, Wimbledon and the US Open. The latter was extremely disappointing as he lost to Martin who hadn't played a match since February. His ranking finished a low 57.
1996
Courier lost a rain interrupted match to Agassi at the Australian Open in a Quarter Final which would decide the top ranking. Courier led 2 Majoli beats Seles and Hingis in Tokyo to reach the final after losing to Seles in the Quarter Finals at the Australian Open. She also reached the Quarter Finals at the French Open, forth round at the US Open after boycotting Wimbledon.
Courier lost a heart breaking 5 set marathon to Sampras in the Australian Open Quarter finals. He led 2 sets to love however a spirited Sampras fought back. He fell to Costa in the round of 16 at the French Open. Courier lost in the second round at Wimbledon for the second year in a row. Courier upset Muster at the US Open to reach the Semi Finals.
Courier started to lose his top form during this year. Sampras easily disposed of him in the Semi Finals of the Australian Open, after Courier beat Ivanisevic in the Quarter Finals. Courier upset Sampras at the French Open to reach the Semi Finals. Bruguera beat him again for the second year in a row. He fell in the second round at Wimbledon to Forget in 5 sets. He lost interest towards the end of the year, as he started reading books during matches particularly in the change overs. He finished the year out of the top ten.
Jim Courier played impressively to win his second consecutive Australian Open. He beat Edberg in 4 sets, in the final as he did last year. He was a heavy favourite to take the French Open, however he was upset by Bruguera in 5 sets. The Wimbledon seeded Courier lower than Edberg, because of his lack of so called grass court ability. However Courier beat Edberg in the Semi Finals to reach his first Wimbledon final. He held the top ranking sporadically during the year but finished ranked 2nd.
Courier won his first Australian Open by defeating Edberg in the final. He dominated the year as he also won the French Open for the second consecutive year. He fell in the third round of Wimbledon.
Courier won his first slam at the French Open by defeating Agassi in 5 sets in the final.
