Davenport is friends with many players including Monica Seles and Natasha Zvereva. She used to be great friends with Mary Joe Fernandez and they were a successful doubles combination. They used to watch each other play their singles matches. At the end of 1996 their friendship split as Lindsay dumped Mary Joe for another partner. She had heard rumours that Mary Joe was playing a limited schedule as they pulled out of the Wimbledon and US Open doubles tournaments.

Lindsay Davenport produces powerful groundstrokes, which she hits her shots well. Her major improvement to her game is her speed as she has lost a lot of weight. It is still a weakness but it has improved. Her volleys are good as she is a top doubles player also. Her serve is her strength as she uses her height to power serves, she also places it well.

1998

Davenport won her first grand slam without conceding a set at the US Open. She defeated Tauziat, Coetzer, Williams and Hingis. In warm up tornaments she defeated Williams, Graf, Hingis, Pierce, Majoli and Seles twice, to win 3 tournaments. She now is current No 1. The following week she belted Coetzer 6-2 6-1 and thrashed Hingis 6-3 6-3 to win the title in Tokyo. She continued her solid form by reaching the Semi finals of the French Open, losing to Sanchez Vicario after defeating Majoli, defending champ, in the Quarter finals.
