Mary Joe FERNANDEZ

Mary Joe Fernandez is my all time favourite player in the world. Fernandez is the most gallant player and has made numerous comebacks from the brink of defeat. She is a very elegant and graceful player. She has worn the attractive dresses during matches for the past four years. Mary Joe has long dark hair, and when she plays she wears it in pony tailed plait or has a number of ties in her tail.

Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernandez were great mates. They combined into a great doubles team in 1996, where they made the final of the Australian Open and won the French Open and the Chase Championships. They were named the top doubles team of the year. Their friendship split when Lindsay dumped Mary Joe to find a new partner. Mary Joe did not intend to play a limited number of tournaments as rumours suggested. In the first round of Fed Cup-tie in '97, Lindsay didn't play because Mary Joe was there.

Mary Joe is a very skinny person and she has suffered many illnesses and injuries, particularly in the past 5 years. She was diagnosed with endometriosis in 1993, which required surgery. A side effect was that she was underweight, possibly by 10kg. This affected her stamina during matches, and she has never being fully fit since. She has carried a wrist injury since 1996 which needed surgery at the beginning of the year and she has struggled to get back on the tour.

Mary Joe Fernandez has a very consistent game, meaning that it is solid in all parts. Her weakness is her lack of power in her upper body. She has suffered numerous injuries. She uses the power of the opponent to hit flat hard winners. Her game is suited to all surfaces, as her groundstrokes are short. When she attacks, she plays her best tennis.

1998

Fernandez missed the Australian Open for the first time in ten years due to wrist surgery. She pulled out of the Croatian Open second round match. Fernandez was forced out of the French Open and Wimbledon. She defeated Rubin in straight sets in her come back tournament in California, falling to old foe Graf. Fernandez thrashed Pierce 6-1 6-1 at the Canadian Open. She saved 7 match points against Fusai at the US Open, before falling to Schynder in the third round. In Tokyo she defeated Raymond.

1997

Fernandez started the year impressively beating Coetzer (for the second year in a row), Po and Majoli in Sydney. At the Australian Open she beat an in form van Roost. At Indian Wells, Fernandez easily disposed of Po and Martinez before being caned by Davenport. The next week at Lipton, Fernandez got revenge on Davenport, winning 6-2 6-4 to reach the quarter finals. The German Open was her first title of the year where she beat Testud, Kournikova, Novotna and Pierce all in straight sets. At the French Open Fernandez beat Raymond before a tough match with Seles 3-6 6-2 7-5 where Seles lead 4-2 in the 3rd set. At Wimbledon Fernandez was unlucky to lose to Novotna 5-7 6-4 7-5, where controversial line calls and ridiculous overrules from the umpire cost her a potential final birth. Fernandez battled a back injury against Novotna at the US Open. At the Chase Championships Fernandez made another classic comeback from a double break down, for her second victory over Davenport of the year which she finished ranked 10.

1996

Fernandez was over powered by Schultz McCarthy in Sydney 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the quarter finals after beating Coetzer in straight sets. Sanchez Vicario beat her at the Australian Open. Fernandez made the third round of Indian Wells & the German Open and the forth round of the Lipton & the French. The latter event she played title winner Graf, losing a rain interrupted match 6-1 7-6(9-7). She partnered Davenport to take the doubles slam. Fernandez upset Martinez and Novotna on grass at Eastbourne on one tough day, losing to Seles in a tired effort on the next. Her Wimbledon form was good as well, until a back injury stopped her at the Quarter Finals, stopping a possible final birth. Fernandez, a late replacement for Rubin, upset second seeded Martinez at the Atlanta Olympic Games. She was forced to withdraw from the US Open for the second time in four years with a wrist injury and struggled through the year to finish ranked 12.

1995

Fernandez started the year losing to Sabatini in the Semi Finals of Sydney. Her ranking dropped to a low of 19 before the Australian Open, where she beat Coetzer before losing to Sawamatsu. Fernandez won her second title at Indian Wells beating Martinez, Sawamatsu and Zvereva. She fell in the first round of the French Open however, she defeated Davenport at Wimbledon. It was her first Quarter Final of a slam in two years where she played Graf in top form. Wiesner led a set and a double break, until Fernandez came back to win her US Open opening round 4-6 6-4 6-3. Fernandez pulled out of the doubles and mixed so she could also beat defending champion, Sanchez Vicario, after being down a break in the 2nd & 3rd sets to win 1-6 6-4 6-4. Sabatini was up 6-1 5-1 (like the '93 French) against a tired opponent and needed 7 match points to win. Fernandez finished the year ranked 8.

1994

In starting the year, Fernandez thrashed Sabatini to reach the final of Sydney. Fernandez courageously beat Gorrechatagui 6-3 2-6 9-7 in the extreme heat of the Australian Open after trailing 2-4 in the 3rd. Although Davenport won their fourth round, she led 6-2 5-2 until Fernandez stole the 2nd set in a tie break and saved 3 match points. Fernandez fell to Coetzer 2-6 6-2 7-6 in the Quarter Finals of Indian Wells. Fernandez struggled with her medication of her endometriosis and missed several tournaments throughout the year. She surprised herself as well as everyone to win Strasburg. Her slam performances were poor, falling in the third round of the French, Wimbledon and US Opens. She played only 10 tournaments for the year and was ranked 13 at its completion.

1993

The Australian Open was a solid performance for a flu ridden Fernandez reaching the Quarter finals. As the top seed, she won the title at Indian Wells beating Coetzer in the final after saving a match point. Graf beat her in the Semis of the German Open and Fernandez went of to make the final of the French Open where she made two huge comebacks. Schultz led 6-2 5-3 30-15, serving however Fernandez broke back to trail 2-6 4-5 0-15 when rain luckily interrupted play. She won the match 2-6 7-5 6-3. In the Quarter final she trailed Sabatini 1-6 1-5 and faced 5 match points, before coming back to win 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 10-8. Sabatini served for the match a massive 6 times to lose the marathon in 3 hours 36 minutes. She trashed Sanchez Vicario in the Semis 6-2 6-2. Fernandez came the closest to ever beating Graf in a terrific high standard final 4-6 6-2 6-4. She gallantly led 4-3 in the 3rd set until Graf fought back. After Wimbledon, she only played 8 more matches for the year as she was diagnosed with endometriosis. She was also extremely underweight, possibly by 10 Kilograms. Fernandez did finish the year ranked 7.

1992

Sabatini beat Fernandez in the Semi Finals of Sydney, whilst Fernandez beat Sabatini 6-1 6-4 in the Semi Finals of the Australian Open. Her attacking style was impressive and looked set to take her first slam. However, the Seles power was too strong. In the doubles, she reached her third straight final, this time with Garrison. Fernandez also made the final of Essen but failed to win a title and was beaten in the third round of the French Open and Wimbledon. She won the Bronze at the Barcellona Olympic Games losing to Graf in the semi final. Gigi and Mary Joe Fernandez won the doubles gold upsetting home crowd favourites Martinez and Sanchez Vicario. At the US Open, Fernandez beat Sabatini to reach the Semi finals. She finished the year ranked 6.

 1991

Fendick and Fernandez took the doubles slam at the Australian Open. In the semi finals of the singles, Fernandez fought hard against Seles. Seeded as high as 3, Fernandez took the 2nd set 6-love and held a match point at 6-7 on the Seles serve. In the severe heat of the summer, Seles broke serve at 7-7 to go on to take the match 6-3 0-6 9-7. Sanchez Vicario beat her in Fed Cup and the French Open, but Fernandez got revenge in making the Semi Finals of Wimbledon defeating Sanchez 6-2 7-5. The finish of the year was disappointing as she fell in the third round of the US Open. She finished the year ranked 8.

1990

Fernandez made her first ever slam final at the Australian Open. She defeated Garrison in hot conditions 1-6 6-2 8-6 in the Quarter Finals and lost to Graf in the final. She also reached the doubles final with Fendick. At the French Open, Capriati, 14 years old, beat her in the Quarter finals. She missed Wimbledon due to injury. At the US Open, Fernandez lost a tough 3 setter to Sabatini 7-5 5-7 6-4 in the semi finals. She won back to back titles for the first time in her career at Tokyo and Filderstadt and reached the semi final of the now known Chase Championships. She finished the year with a career high ranking of 4.
