Mirjana LUCIC |
|
Mirjana Lucic is the youngest player on the current circuit and is a promising young player.
She has made alligations of abuse against her father, saying he hit her when matches did not go well. She no longer trains with her father.
Unfortunately, Mirjana is playing doubles with Hingis. The combination won the '98 Australian Open making Lucic the youngest champion. When Lucic plays Hingis, hopefully she can play her best. She is likely to play into the Hingis hands.

Mirjana Lucic has a unique return of serve. She stands closer to the service line than the base line on the return. This allows her to take the ball very early as she has the best groundstrokes since Monica Seles. Lucic's early timing of her shots makes her able to create power from both her forehand and backhand.
However, if her return does not go deep, she is left in no-man's land. This was exploited badly by Majoli at the Australian Open this year. If Lucic can follow the ball into the net, which she is now practising by playing doubles, she can be a terrific player.
Lucic defended her title in her home country, Croatia. She defeated Kruger, the top seed, 6-2 6-1 in the semi final. Lucic lost to Serena Willams 4-6 6-3 7-5 in Sydney. She lost to compatriot, Majoli, in the second round of the Australian Open in a match with lots of controversy. Majoli complained of apparent illegal coaching from the sidelines. Lucic slammed the umpire, Donna Ring, for making bad overrules. Lucic had success, winning the doubles slam with Hingis. Lucic pulled out of the French Open due to a virus. Lucic, still suffering fatigue, lost in the second round at Wimbledon to Serena Williams. Lucic upset Sawamatsu at the US Open but easily lost to Graf, after being distracted with family problems.
Her debut was very impressive winning her first event in Croatia, beating Coetzer in the semi finals. In Strasburg, she made the final losing to Graf. Graf gave her praise by saying she was better than she was at the same age. In her first slam, at the US Open, she made the Third round. She trailed 6-2 4-1(double break) against Novotna, before she rallied back to take the set. In set 3, she led 3-1 before she lost 6-2 6-7 6-3. She won the junior Australian Open at 14.
