Sabine Appelmans is a scrappy player with good loopy groundstrokes. She can also hit the ball hard when necessary. Her serve and volley are solid without being spectacular. She needs more power to become a better player.

1998

Appelmans lost her first 2 matches of the year in the Australian Open to Maleeva 6-1 1-6 6-3 and to Zvereva 6-2 2-6 6-3. She beat Graf 6-3 7-6 in her comeback tournament in Hannover. Appelmans fell in the opening round to Pierce, at the French Open. Her ranking has slipped this year. She fell in the third round at Wimbledon to compatriot, van Roost.

1997

Appelmans won the 2nd set against Hingis in Sydney, the only set Hingis lost in Australia. Seeded 16, she continued her good form and reached the Quarter finals at the Australian Open. She struggled with heat and fell behind 2-6 3-5 15-40 to Martinez, seeded 3. She saved the 2 match points and went on take the match 2-6 7-5 6-1, with both players needing medical attention at the end of the match. Appelmans took the 1st set against Pierce 6-1 and lead 3-0 in the 3rd set before her nerves got the better of her and she lost 1-6 6-4 6-4. At Wimbledon she beats Schultz McCarthy, for the second year in a row, 6-2 6-3. She falls to Kournikova in the opening round at the US Open. She beat Fernandez 6-2 6-1 in Chicago.
