Serena WILLIAMS

Richard Williams' children, Venus and Serena, were born to play tennis. They were promising juniors in the USA, until he pulled them out of the system. They are now playing professionally, and Serena made her slam debut at the '98 Australian Open. Richard has taught them to be winners, and Serena has confidence while playing as well as off the court.

Serena commentated her sister's matches at the Australian Open. She spoke with clarity and authority. Serena even interviewed Venus after her third round win. Her comments were appropriate and she spoke of irritant tactics used in the quarter final between her sister and Davenport.

Venus and Serena Williams wear white coloured beads in their hair. At Wimbledon, they wore green and purple beads as well as the white, to represent the Wimbledon colours. In Australia Serena wore green, yellow and white beads, the colours of Australia. Their beads are very noisy when brushed against each other when she plays. Serena is proud that her beads stay in her hair better than Venus. The beads in Serena's hair add character to her personality as well her game.

Serena has powerful groundstrokes and a big serve. Her volleys are her weakness as they were exposed in the doubles of the Australian Open. Serena is working on her speed, as it could be a possible weakness.

1998

Serena Williams qualified for the Sydney tournament, and defeated Lucic and Davenport to reach the semi finals. Against Davenport, in the quarter finals, she trailed 1-6 2-5 15-40. She saved 2 match points and won 5 games in row to take the 2nd set. She trailed 2-4 in the 3rd set before she won 1-6 7-5 7-5. At the Australian Open, she defeated Spirlea 6-7 6-3 6-1 in the opening round. She was stopped by her sister, Venus. She played with Aussie teenager, Lleyton Hewwit, in the mixed and her sister in the doubles. At the Lipton she won more games than Hingis but lost 6-3 1-6 7-6. Williams thrashed van Roost 6-1 6-1 at the French Open and lead a set and 5-2 against Sanchez Vicario. However her nerves and a soft balling Sanchez lost her the forth round match 4-6 7-5 6-3, a match which could have put her into the final. Serena reached the final of the Mixed doubles where she lost to her sister in the final. Serena won the mixed doubles at the US Open and Wimbledon, but fell in the third round in the singles. She beat Lucic at Wimbledon.

1997

Williams made her debut in Chicago, beating top tenners Pierce 6-3 7-6 and Seles 3-6 6-1 6-1. She was finally stopped by Davenport losing in 6-4 6-4.
