Venus WILLIAMS

Richard Williams' children, Venus and Serena, were born to play tennis. They were promising juniors in the USA, until he pulled them out of the system. They are now playing professionally and Venus made her slam debut at the '97 French Open. Venus begged her father to play the US Open, a slam in which she made the final. Richard has taught them to be winners and Venus has carried that through her personality.

Venus and Serena Williams wear white coloured beads in their hair. At Wimbledon they wore green and purple beads as well as the white, which represent the Wimbledon colours. At the US Open Venus wore red, white and blue beads, the colours of America. In Australia, Venus wore blue yellow and white. Venus has received some criticism, because her beads are very noisy when brush against each other when she plays. The beads in Venus' hair add character to her personality as well her game.

Venus Williams is a terrific stroke maker, pounding winners at a frequent rate. She does not time her groundstrokes as early Seles, but relies on her natural power from her big 6ft body. She is has a huge serve as well. Venus has remarkable speed and is very athletic for such a big player. Venus is the only woman player to have perfected the Slam dunk on the high overheads.

1998

Venus Williams made her a great Australian debut beating Hingis in Sydney to reach the final. At the Australian Open she was the form player, before losing to Davenport 1-6 7-5 6-3.
