Retained Organs Commission

We are in contact with the commission and on 6th June we had a meeting with the Chairperson Professor Margo Brazier and the Chief Executive Steve Catling. We raised a number of concerns that the commission has promised to take up as action items:

  • The Commission would remind National Health Service (NHS) Trusts of the importance of maintaining regular contact with inquirers even if there was nothing specific to report.

  • As you know the government have promised that there will be a change in the law and of the Chief Medical Officer's promise of 'Never Again'.

  • The Commission will have a say in any new legislation and they will report back any progress.

  • The association of organ retention with problems with transplantation and recruitment to pathology has been in the news a lot recently. We emphasised that the parents and their children are the victims and are not to blame for problems arising from the organ retention issues. The Commission noted PITY II's concerns on these matters.

  • The Commission agreed to raise specific problems with Liverpool University relating to stillborn babies & foetuses.

  • The difficulty that some parents are still experiencing in obtaining information from certain hospitals

They will also seek further information about the European Study of Foetal Pathology on behalf of PITY II

As you may know, the Retained Organs Commission has given the go ahead for many hospitals to release information to relatives. We hope they will soon be giving approval to NHS Trusts to return organs & tissue to families who have requested them.

A list of those Trusts that have been given the green light should be available for the next newsletter.

We have agreed another meeting with the commission and PITY II for 3 months time. This will be just before the Commission's board meeting scheduled for 12th September in Liverpool. We will let you know more information about that nearer the time.
