Report from the Chair

PITY II Chair, John O'HareI am pleased to report that your newly elected committee, in the short three months since the AGM, has been actively engaged in numerous activities on your behalf, and I would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief summary of just a few of them.

Meeting with Professor Margo Brazier & Steve Catling of the Retained Organs Commission.

Meeting with Mr. Alan Winter at Liverpool Council offices to discuss the future of the Myrtle Street building. Mr Winter is a Senior Consultant for the council and he has been appointed by them to investigate the Myrtle Street issues. Alan Winter subsequently attended one of our committee meetings to discuss Myrtle Street and to explain the implications, and so forth, of demolishing the building. He told us that it is now high on his list of priorities. and promised to maintain dialogue with PITY II and keep us updated as to further developments. A copy of the meeting minutes is available on request.

Tony Bell. Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, Alder HeyAlder Hey published their response to the Redfern Inquiry Report and PITY II has given a written comment on their response. This was presented and discussed with them at a meeting with Angela Jones, Tony Bell and Kate Jackson on 12th July 2001. We also discussed the proposed plans for releasing organs to parents as soon as they received the green light from the ROC.

A second meeting with Tony Bell, Angela Jones and Anne Routledge took place on 16th August 2001 to discuss local and national media reports relating to Alder Hey's policy on funeral expenses. Copies of all the responses and meetings are available upon request.

I have written to Professor John Lilleyman, President of the Royal College of Pathologists, protesting at the negative media statements by his colleagues at the recent British Medical Association's (BMA) conference at Bournemouth. So far Professor Lilleyman has not responded. A follow up letter will be sent soon.

Professor Sir Brian Follett made a special visit to Liverpool to meet with PITY II to explain the Follett review as reported elsewhere on this site.

PITY II has been in contact with the CPS and Merseyside Police and will continue to monitor the situation. We must point out that it is up to the parents involved to report their individual case to the police themselves if they so desire.

A letter has been sent to Lord Hunt inviting him to meet with PITY II. Since the General Election, Hazel Blears, MP, has taken over from Lord Hunt as the minister responsible for Organ Retention and we have been told that our letter has been passed on to her.

Your committee has been supporting a number of fund-raising events including:

  • A sponsored walk organised by the Adamson Family and reported in the last Children for Children Newsletter/webpage;
  • A charity night out in Manchester organised byDenise and Bill Green, and their families, and their presentation to me in PITY II's office of a cheque for a fantastic sum of £981.50. A very welcome and needed boost to our funds.

The siblings affected by the organ retention have not been forgotten. A special football-training day was organised by the Adamson family who also publish the 'Children for Children' newsletter . Further events are in the pipeline.

As you know, PITY II have their very own website (indeed, you are perusing it now!) and it has expanded greatly over the past few months. It is now accessible worldwide and is linked to many other sites.

If you have any items (such as news, information of interest to parents - in fact anything at all that you feel may be of interest, then please let us know. We will pass all suitable submissions on to our Webmaster.

Web users will be aware that we also have our own e-mail address [email PITY II]. Please feel free to e-mail us and rest assured that I, or another member, will respond to your messages or queries as soon as possible.

These are just a few of our activities since the AGM. They don't, of course, include such things as our continuing support to existing parents and families and to the many new parents coming forward. Giving advice, information and helping in whatever way we can, including sending out copies of the Redfern report and information packs.

We are still receiving an increasing number of enquiries from around the country, and the rest of the world, as our reputation spreads and we endeavour to provide help and advice wherever we can.

This brings me once again to repeat the appeal that we have made on numerous occasions. That is for volunteers to help in the PITY II Office. We have had some response for which we are very grateful, but we still desperately need more help. Any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Please contact the office if you can help in any way.

Don't forget the CD ' Living with Angels' by Ryan G is still on sale price £3.00 from the PITY II office more about CD

Kind Regards, John.
