Consumers in NHS Research

As reported in December 2001, on the 5th December 2001 - four PITY II representatives (Paula O'Leary, Alice Proctor, Christine Woods and Chair, John O'Hare) attended a meeting of the Consumers in NHS Research Unit. We attended at the invitation of their chairman Mr Nick Partridge and it was as a result of a previous visit to PITY II by one of their Field Workers, Roger Steel.

PITY II has since had a very kind letter from Nick Partridge in which he thanks Alice, Paula, Christine and John for attending their meeting and also for the PITY II 's presentation:

"We all found your [John's] talk both powerful and moving, and we are keen to do what we can to support your work."

It was agreed in principal to working with PITY II to develop plans for an expert workshop. Roger Steel has informed PITY II that due to moving offices and other difficulties, he expects it be around mid February when he will be able to start attending to plans to move forward with the seminar. Although the idea has been accepted in principal it must be emphasised that nothing definite has been decided as yet

The presentation to the meeting lasted over 15 minutes and included:

  • A brief history of PITY II
  • Refern Report
  • Accountability
  • What is needed to make sure events of the past cannot happen again.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
