Reform of the Law

The Retained Organs Commission held a workshop for lawyers and legal academics on law reform at the end of April. This was to discuss the progress and issues around reforming the law.

Although some progress has been made, it is a complex issue, and there is a need to ensure that any legislation includes all current and anticipated future medical developments. It seems unlikely that any primary legislation will come in before the end of 2003 at the earliest. If it is not got right this time then an opportunity has been lost.

An introductory paper on the issues was produced for that meeting, and copies are available from the PITY II office.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
