Unidentifiable Babies A meeting took place with the Retained Organs Commission and the PITY II executive to discuss the respectful disposal of unidentifiable babies. These babies can never be identified or claimed by their families, so we feel that arrangements must be made to bury them respectfully. This has not
been without problems but good progress is being made. No funerals for these babies will take place without us notifying all our members and hopefully it will be reported in the press. An article about these babies appeared in the Daily Post on Saturday 6th December. Press
Statement from the Retained Organs Commission Issued on 5 December
2003 The Retained Organs Commission with the agreement of the local NHS Trust and the University have decided to take forward a proposal to give unidentifiable bodies of pre-term and stillborn babies held in collections in Liverpool a respectful and appropriate funeral. PITY II, the local retained organs family support group, have been consulted and fully support the proposal. Other key local stakeholders are also being consulted on the proposal. According to the Redfern Report and more recent information it is likely that there are around 1000 unidentifiable bodies involved from the University and the local NHS Trust. The Commission
recognises that this is a complex issue, but that it is also urgent.
Current plans are for a local steering committee to be convened to
meet either just before or just after the Christmas break. Its initial
task will be to identify the practical steps needed and plan out the
timetable.
