General Medical Council Update Dr van Velzen

Dr. van Velzen was suspended by the GMC in February 2001 following the publication of the Redfern report. We were advised on subsequent occasions that the General Medical Council could not proceed with a full disciplinary hearing until the CPS concluded their investigations.

Following the decision made by the CPS in December 2004, not to press any charges against Dr. van Velzen, we contacted the General Medical Council for an update on the outstanding complaints made to them.

We were advised that the GMC are hoping to hold a disciplinary hearing in late spring/early summer in London into the issues raised by the Redfern report. We were also advised that any outstanding individual complaints against him made by families would not be taken into account.

They presumed that families had been advised of this decision. Some families had made their complaints before the Redfern report was published in 2001. Any families who have made their own complaints against Dr. van Velzen may wish to contact the GMC to register their concerns, 0207 189 5140 [in the UK]

We also advised the GMC that more than 850 families from the North West had been affected by un-consented organ retention by Dr. van Velzen and therefore may wish to attend any hearings; especially if they could be held in their Manchester offices rather than London. We asked that they keep us informed of dates for the hearings.

In turn we will keep you informed in our next newsletter and any new information will also be placed on our Website.
