The Inquiry

The Inquiry Team has now said that their report will not be presented to the Health Minister until 18th August. Last Thursday (20th July) they gave us the following statement.

"The Royal Liverpool Children's Inquiry expects to deliver its report to the Secretary of State on 18th August. The Secretary of State commissioned the report and is committed to making its results public once he has considered its findings, recommendations and what further action may be necessary."

It is a big disappointment that we will have to wait longer for the report to be published. At this stage we do not know how long Alan Milburn will want to study the report before he lets parents have it, but we will be writing to him to urge him to publish it quickly.

We have made some proposals for the circulation of the report when it finally comes out, as we feel it is very important for parents to see it before they hear about it from the media. These are only our proposals and we do not know if the Secretary of State will agree with them, but we hope that he will.

Our proposals are

  • A small group of parents should have prior access to the report (earlier the same day or the evening before) along with legal advisers. They would then be available to deal with press interviews when the report is published.

  • Some of the co-ordinators would be identified as central locations for copies of the report, to be delivered by courier. Parents could then go there to collect their copies of the report.

  • A list will be drawn up of parents who live too far away for people to travel to an allocated co-ordinators house, and alternative arrangements will be made for them. We hope this will include the report being available on a website for those with access to the Internet. If you live too far away from a co-ordinator to be able to get there to collect a report, please let your co-ordinator know.

We know that there will be a lot of media interest in the report. We just hope that parents will be able to see the report without reading leaks from it in the media.

We had hoped that there would be a seminar for parents with the Inquiry Team but it seems that this will not now take place. We are hoping that there will be the opportunity to meet with the Inquiry Team after the publication of the report, sometime in September.
