Blocks and Slides

Many of you will have heard about the hospital taking samples of tissue in small wax blocks (about the size of a book of matches), which are then used to take microscopic samples, which are put on glass slides.

Sometimes these were taken at the time of post mortem, and some were taken more recently before organs were released for burial. The hospital has now said they are not taking samples before organ release.

Discussions are still ongoing with the hospital as to whether these can be returned to parents, and this has not been resolved yet.

The hospital will not automatically tell you if they have blocks and slides of your child. They have a detailed list of the blocks and slides that they have, so if you want to know you should ring the helpline and ask them.

They will be able to ring you back and tell you what they have got.

PITY II (Parents who have Interred Their Young Twice) is the parents' support group set up in the wake of the organ retention scandal
at Alder Hey Hospital (Liverpool, UK). It aims to provide self help support and advice to affected families.
