The Independent Inquiry

We still do not have a date as to when the report will be published. It has been handed over by the Inquiry Team to Alan Milburn MP, the Secretary of State for Health, and it is up to him when and how it will be published. There have been rumours that it will be 8th of December, but they remain as rumours. As soon as we have heard anything more definite we will let people know.

Representations have been made that the report should be published before Christmas so that families are not left waiting too long - we have waited long enough already. We hope that we will be given the report before the press gets it - we have made suggestions that the report could be delivered to co-ordinators houses for members to go and collect them. This will make it quicker to access the report, although we realise that not everyone will be able to travel to collect a copy.

Relying on the post or couriers to deliver the report is likely to lead to some delays, so despite our efforts you may hear the outcome of the Inquiry on the news first. Please inform PITY II by contacting the office whether you will collect your report, and if so where you will collect it from, or if you want it posting to you. Please inform PITY II's office as soon as possible so that we can co-ordinate the arrangements. It is important to note that these are the arrangements we hope will be put in place - there is no guarantee that the Department of Health will listen to our wishes.

We also need a list of families who will be willing to speak to the media on the day the report comes out. There is likely to be significant interest from all the newspapers, radio and TV channels, and a number of people will be needed to field interviews. If you would be willing to help, please speak to any member of the committee.

Dealing with the press in the run up to the report will be difficult, and the committee have agreed not to give any interviews until the report is published, to ensure that we are not put under pressure, or misrepresented in any way. Once the report is available we will arrange a meeting of the whole group early in the New Year to decide on any future action.

The Chief Medical Officer's report, which we had said was due to be published in the autumn, has now been delayed until next year.
