This is a section from an on-line interactive fiction called ’Shadows’. It was written by a friend of mine and myself [my friend already being part of ‘Shadows’, her characters being Arau and Detaya.] We both enjoyed writing this together and I thought, “Hey! Why not chuck it up on my site and give Shadows a plug?”
Again, that url is www.vampireshadows.com.
Disclaimer type stuff
This was put up here with the permission of the authors. Oh, yeah, and there is swearing and violence and dodgy stuff following this disclaimer.
A Disturbance At The Shroud
“Detaya.” A voice spoke out from behind her. Detaya swung her head around, her loose hair nearly hitting Michel’s face in the process.
It was the man, the owner of the Dodge Viper, the man that she remembered from her past, for good or bad.
She didn’t remember him, he could tell by the look in her eyes. But there was confusion too.
“Do you know who I am?” He asked.
“I don’t have time for this!” She replied, she couldn’t deal with this right now. She’d wanted to ease herself back into society, not get thrown in!
“Bullshit!” Arau raised his voice, “sorry.” He apologised immediately, lowering his voice. He’d never raised his voice to her before, and he didn’t want to start.
“You have longer than most Detaya, I know you do.” He protested.
“Not here and not now.” Detaya got up; the other patrons were watching them, not intensely, but enough for the familiarity of uncomfortableness to set in.
Arau straightened. “Yes here, and yes now Detaya, I’ve not seen you in…” He paused and looked around slightly. “Ages.”
Detaya looked at him coldly. “Go away.” She hissed. She turned to Michel. “I’d better go, he’s making a scene.” Detaya turned to leave, turning back she kissed Michel softly on the cheek and gently whispered so quietly that no human ears could hear; “For old times sake.”
Detaya hurried out of the shroud, and Arau started to follow her.
Jaromiah grabbed Arau’s arm. “Stop Tobias, Maybe you should give her some time.”
“Time is something that doesn’t apply here, how long does she need, and eternity? I’ve given her one!” Arau grabbed Jac by the shoulders. “Do you even know who she is! That is Iyana! Iyana, Pokey!” Arau hissed.
“I know who you’re talking about Toby, but you’re wrong.” He said solemnly. “That’s not Iyana, it’s Detaya Ciridel. In more ways than one she is more powerful than anyone here, we both know it. Why do you make yourself blind!”
“I don’t make myself blind to the fact that she is powerful, I just don’t care! And if she doesn’t remember me, I’ll have to make her.” Arau left.
Jac shook his head, and sat down next to this, Michel was it? And ordered another drink.

A Danger in The Park.
Detaya ran into Golden Gate Park. The man would follow her from the shroud she could feel him coming already.
“Hallo, luv,” A man lumbered towards her on her right, it wasn’t the man from the Shroud. Probably just a bum from the park, They never taste that good anyways.
“Gots any Italian in ya?” He slurred, giggling slightly.
“No, I don’t.” She said half ignoring him.
“Wants some?” He laughed again. He’d been drinking, she could smell it as he came closer.
“No, I don’t like Italiano.” She moved away a little, discomforted.
“Ah, everyone likes Italiannnn.” He stroked her hair, swaying a little.
“Get away, ‘fore I kill you.” She growled.
A deep grin came over his face, lighting his eyes as he dropped the act. “Didn’t you know this park’s a dangerous place?” he purred.
The man stopped slurring, he smelt like alcohol, yes, but he was far from drunk. He was alive! He grabbed the woman’s neck.
Detaya choked, the sudden constriction of her throat surprising her. This man wasn’t human, he was far too strong.
The stranger smiled giving a good view as his eye teeth elongated.
Arau stood in the bushes watching the man as he advanced on Iyana. Detaya!
His whole body burned as the man stroked her hair. Arau’s throat constricted.
The man held Detaya’s throat tightly, he was hurting her, and she was frightened and he could feel it emanating from her. The man’s prime-teeth elongated.
The vampire was far too strong for Detaya. His eyes cold and hard had frozen her.
He’d cast some sort of a spell on her, Arau could see the blue shadow of magic around the two.
Anger, jealousy, and longing. All the feelings that had grown from Iyana’s death rose up and threatened to swallow Arau if he did not let them out. And they screamed to be let out…
The power coursed through his body to the tips of his fingers, he flung out his hand towards the dangerous stranger.
Electricity coursed out of his hands in a jagged white line, hitting the man. He fell limp to the ground. Arau ran over to Iyana. DETAYA!
“Are you okay?” He knelt beside her.
“I’m fine.” Her voice was dazed, the magic was still to wear off.
Pain seared through Arau’s back, more pain than any human could handle. He turned around blindly.

Ah, He likes me!
“You fuckin’ wanker!” Arau howled. The pain was subsiding, his regeneration powers going into effect for the first time since the 1800’s. He stared harshly at the newcomer, he did not recognise him.
Detaya’s attacker laughed as he raised his hand, there was a hunting knife in it, dripping with Arau’s blood. He brought it to his face, sniffed it, and then drew the flat of it across his tongue. “Mmm,” he intoned, “You’re an old one, ain’t ya? Tasty too.”
Arau watched as the vampire licked the knife. “Choke on it.” He replied. “You wanna play flesh? I can play too.” Arau kept his eyes on the man, as he tried to recount an old incant he’d learnt off Jac. “Tranza Tianre Linara Pentiri” He spoke and held out his hand.
Miles across San Francisco, one of the many daggers disappeared off Arau’s wall. It reappeared in Arau’s hand, and he grinned. Knife fight, not had a decent one of those in a few years…
With another laugh the vampire shot towards Arau. He twisted at the last moment, bringing the edge of his knife across Arau’s side, cleanly slicing his shirt but only slightly scraping his skin before dancing away again. “Just for starters,” he smirked and ran in again.
Arau glanced at the small cut at his side, he focussed and managed to control his regeneration powers, he would save them for when he needed them. The vampire ran at him again, and Arau sung around, following through in a tight circle, to put a shallow slice across the mans back. He grinned. “Just for starters.” Arau went after the man. “Who are you?” Arau demanded advancing in a circle around the man, enticing him to take another shot.
“What’s my name? Pudding and tame! Ask me once more, and I’ll tell you the same,” he sung as he continued the circle, as he finished he pivoted, bringing the blade around again in a back handed motion for Arau’s shoulder. The latter lent out of the way, but the unnamed man reversed his direction again and brought his knuckles into Arau’s throat.
Arau choked, as the blow hit him with a precision force. “Bastard!” Arau rasped, he let his regeneration powers kick in, and they healed the problem in seconds, swallowing a small amount of energy along with the pain.
“So, Pudding and-“ Arau slid past him and sliced the mans torso in one fluid movement. “-Tame, are you enjoying the game?” Arau grinned, rhymes, always good fun.
The only response was a gleeful giggle as a hand was pressed against the pitiful blood flow coming from his stomach. After a few seconds he raised this to his lips and again licked blood, this time his own. He then ran at Arau again, who lashed out at him but the other vampire ducked and rammed his shoulder into him, knocking them both to the ground. He brought the hilt of his knife across Arau’s face and jumped on him, bringing his knee down into his ribs before leaping off him again and coming to his feet next to Detaya.
“Hallo, luv,” he said and pecked the startled woman on the cheek before turning back to Arau.
Okay, had enough now. Arau threw the dagger at the man, who artfully dodged it.
The power ran through his body, coursing through his veins, it was in every inch of his body and it was ready to be let out. Unlike before, Arau had it under control, he was controlling the flow, he waited till it had built up to the optimum amount of what he needed and let it loose. Electricity shot from one hand and fire from the other.
They hit the man with great force, and he was thrown backwards. His body lay limp on the ground. Arau began to turn, but as he did, the body moved, the man got up.
“Jeez! What kind of bloody vampire are you?!” Arau thought moving backwards, he’d have to use something else on this dude.
Still flaming, the vampire straightened and shook himself. Sniggering uncontrollably he shuddered and blurred, the flames left embarrassedly hanging in the air for a moment before they withered away. Before Arau could know what was happening the vampire was before him, he felt the knife slide into him – a profound warmth in his cold, dead body – and he gasped. He fell into the unnamed vampire who twisted the knife, holding it into him and then turned his head and licked the blood running down Arau’s face.
“A damn good vampire, luv,” he whispered into his ear. “That’s what kind I am.” Then he wrenched the knife out of Arau, blurred again and was gone.
Arau knelt on the grass to which his blood seeped on. Arau let his energy heal him, but there wasn’t much energy left to heal with. He managed to stop the blood loss, but he could not close the wounds.
“I- Thanks…” Detaya helped him up from the ground. Arau coughed. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” She paused. “Come to my place, we can wash you up.”
Arau nodded, and followed her, leaving his blood to stain the grass.
