  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2-Second Look

    Last Updated July 31,2000

    Publisher:Activision

    Developer:Neversoft

    Release Date:Summer 2000

The gap between skateboarders and the rest of the world will narrow a bit more on September 13 when Tony Hawk returns to PlayStation in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Much to the delight of skaters and gamers alike, Activision has made a sequel to last year's surprise hit and it's packed with bigger levels, crazier parks, more playable characters with updated tricks. Just in case the included parks aren't radical enough, the easy to use park editor lets you build fantasy levels that would make a real pro skater cry with fear, or even re-create local skate spots. The game also bomb-drops a career mode, two player modes, free skate, and create-a-skater in your lap. With the same awesome game engine, more pros, cool options, new levels, and updated animations, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is bound to go big this year.

    Galaga Destination Earth

    Publisher:?

    Developer:?

    Release Date:September 2000

Hasbro adds to their line of retro remakes with this new version of Galaga, subtitled Destination Earth. In this iteration of the arcade classic, you're still fighting those familiar insectoid enemies. However, there are a couple of new twists. First, you'll be blasting bugs in a plethora of new perspectives, including "classic" top-down, Gradius-style side-scrolling, and Starfox-esque 3D. You'll also have to complete specific mission objectives and collect power-ups while you blast the enemy bugs. Both of these new elements add deeper gameplay to this nostalgia-inducing title. Galaga: Destination Earth just might suck you in when it swoops into stores in late September.

    Developer:?

    Release Date:October 2000

Just in time for Halloween comes possibly the scariest monster game of all: Muppet Monster Adventure. You'll take the role of Robin the Frog (Kermit's helpless nephew) and enter a world filled with evil creatures. Your mission: rescue your Muppet friends (Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, Ms. Piggy, etc.) who have all been magically transformed into hideous monsters. Using morphing powers granted by tokens you find on your way through, you'll climb, swim, bash, fly, and more on your quest to save the more famous Muppets. It'll be time to start the music and light the lights when the Muppet Monster Adventure hits the PlayStation in late October.

    Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX

    Last Updated July 31,2000

    Publisher:?

    Developer:Squaresoft

    Release Date:November 2000

With the success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, extreme sports games are all the rage. From Activision, the company that brought you the Hawk himself, comes Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX. Pro BMX will let you ride with eight pros, including Mike Escamilla, Joe Kawalski, and, of course, 10-time world vert champion, Mat Hoffman. You'll be able to bike in Single-Session or Free Ride modes, as well as a career mode that will let you customize your bike and rider as you improve. Multiplayer modes will include H.O.R.S.E., Graffiti, and an intriguing Destruction Derby. With the well-tested Tony Hawk engine backing it up, Pro BMX looks like a smooth ride in early November.

    Parasite Eve 2

    Last Updated July 31,2000

    Publisher:?

    Developer:?

    Release Date:September 2000

Square fans will remember Parasite Eve as the first game to try to bridge the gap between RPGs and survival horror, and PE2 promises to bridge that gap even further. Aya Brea, the heroine from PE, is now a hunter of monsters mutated by the mitochondrial parasites that plagued the first game in the series. Electing to take a more Resident-Evil-type combat system, this sequel should deliver a more action-based punch than its somewhat slow and confusing predecessor. Look out for Parasite Eve in mid-September.
