Making Parachutes Compatible with Paralaunch

Here are instructions for making your own parachutes.

Each parachute launched is only restricted by how fast it returns to the ground.
With as little weight as needed to keep the parachute upright, it can easily coast far from where you remain holding the kite string. Be aware that launching a parachute should only be done after you joyfully kiss it good bye.

Let’s build a parachute:

  1. On an open large table, spread out an unused plastic garbage bag.
  2. With a large circular bowl and a ball point pen, draw large circles on the bag being careful to not cross any seams in the bag.
  3. Cut out the circles and separate them from each other. You will end up with multiples of two times the number of circles drawn on the bag.
  4. For each parachute cut three strings twice as long as the circles are wide.
  5. With the enclosed circular sticker spots (or cellophane tape) tape each string onto the opposite sides of the circle with the string facing out from it’s center (see figure).

  6. Pull the chute up from the center until all strings fall to the bottom.
  7. Now fold the chute until the beginning of each string attached to the plastic is on top of each other.
  8. Pinch the strings where they are folded at the bottom.
  9. Push the folded end through a washer (included in the kit) and then push the washer through the string loop creating a knot around it.

The parachute is now complete and ready to be attached to the Paralaunch, itself attached to the string on a flying kite.
