CATEGORY | #S | SPOILERS & THOUGHTS |
Best Picture | 3/5 | LOTR: The Two Towers; Not complaining.
The Pianist; Not all that surprised. |
Best Actor | 5/5 | None; Probably the easiest to figure out, with the exception of Animated Feature. Still wish Dicaprio could've been here for Catch Me If You Can. Still, it's just nice to see Adrien Brody finally get some recognition. |
Best Actress | 4/5 | Renee Zellweger; Come on. Who'd have thought Renee Zellweger over Meryl Streep? All I have to say is "Take THAT you non-Salma Hayek supporters!" |
Best Supporting Actor | 2/5 | Chris Cooper - Adaptation; eh... kind of
expected it, and that's not a bad thing.
John C. Reilly - Chicago; well... if you say so, but... Dennis Quaid are you THAT Far From Heaven? Christopher Walken - Catch Me If You Can; OOOOOH YEAAH! Two mice fell into a vat of cream... Love it! |
Best Supporting Actress | 3/5 | Julianne Moore - The Hours; Well, I would've expected Meryl Streep over Moore to be the Hours double-nominee, but... oh well. Queen Latifah; not a bad choice, didn't see it happening, but I'm glad it did. |
Best Director | 3/5 | Pedro Almoldovar - Talk to Her; If you say you
saw this one coming, you're either lying or one lucky shot.
Roman Polanski - The Pianist; Have we learned yet that any noms for The Pianist are neither surprise nor complaint? |
Best Original Screenplay | 3/5 | My Big Fat Greek Wedding; Um... I may be wrong, but... isn't this ADAPTED? Talk to Her; haven't seen it, so I can't say, but Punch Drunk Love just holds a special place in my twisted heart. |
Best Adapted Screenplay | 4/5 | About a Boy over Road to Perdition. I knew it was between one of these two great movies. |
Best Art Direction | 4/5 | Road to Perdition over Pinocchio... I'm so glad I was wrong. I personally thought it was going to get it, but chose Pinocchio because I thought the Academy would chose it. I underestimate them yet again. |
Best Cinematography | 3/5 | Gangs of New York; Eh... ok.
The Pianist; here we go again. |
Best Animated Picture | 5/5 | None; This was too easy. As for who will win... |
Best Score | 3/5 | Catch Me If You Can; Both the Spielberg movies had
great scores. Not complaining. I actually own this one.
The Hours; This one's actually a pretty good one too, no complaints. There's just something about Punch Drunk Love though. |
Best Original Song | 3/5 | Burn it Blue - Frida; Hm... no Spirit? Ok...
I Move On - Chicago; well, the musical has to have something musical nominated. But Travis's "Love Will Come Through" is haunting. |
Best Costume | 3/5 | The Hours; same as with Pianist. Not complaining.
The Pianist; um... look up. |
Best Makeup | 0/2 | Frida; I'll give you. The aging is amazing, but...
The Time Machine; Ouch! |
Best Editing | 4/5 | LOTR: The Two Towers; This or Frida...? Whichever. Both are great. |
Best Sound Editing | 0/3 | Not a one. I suck. |
Best Sound Effects Editing | 3/5 | Chicago; Guess I should've seen
that one coming. Star Wars was pretty much filler on my list.
Road to Perdition; damn, I would've almost bet money on Signs.
|
Best Visual Effects | 3/3 | None; and I thought this one was going to be difficult. |
TOTAL | 55/88 | Well, I did worse than last year, but this was a difficult year.
Best surprises: Salma Hayek's and Christopher Walken's nods. OH YEAH! Two Towers for best picture? Sure! Frida got a lot more love than was expected of it and to that I give major kudos, but... they missed Alfred Molina. Well, maybe next time. As for Chicago, Catherine Zeta-Jones, you are a QUEEN! Speaking of which... Ms. Latifa, I bow at your feet. With these fine performances and the battle between the female-heavy The Hours and Chicago for best picture, I must say, in the land of Hollywood, this is was the year of the woman. YOU GO, GIRLS! Disappointments: Dicaprio not getting recognized for his performance in Catch Me If You Can. In fact, the whole movie's lack of support. As well as the disappearing act we'll call Punch Drunk Love. Dennis Quaid, where are you? Did Spirit's soundtrack die with the movie's boxoffice? And lastly, just a random, unsurprised complaint, where's the love for Frailty? |
