Of the 600 hymns contained in this hymnal, about half of them were listed for being popular and/or singable hymns of sufficient creativity and musicality, without awkward melodic-interval progressions nor inconvenient note-value rhythms.
Different poetic lyrics are sometimes used for the same tunes. Hymn singers generally prefer and associate a particular group of poetic lyrics for each particular tune.
Of concern is some of the tempo and dynamic descriptions given for some of the hymns. For example, there is stated that the hymn 'Nearer My God To Thee' should be sung 'fast and joyful.' Apparently, the commentator who miswrote such impropriety had some kind of weird aversion against slower funeral-song tempos, as do some who are nervously fearful against not rushing tempos that must be respectfully sung with stately and dignified seriousness in somber reverence.
