PORT NECHES-GROVES AT VIDOR
· When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
· Where: Pirate Stadium, Vidor
· Records: PN-G 2-2, Vidor 0-4
· Series: PN-G leads 30-8-1
· Last year: PN-G, 34-14
· Radio: KOLE-AM (1340)
· Indians capsule: Matt Burnett's Tribe started a memorable seven-game win streak at this venue by playing extremely well here last year. One of the game's stars, running back Jeff Bergeron, is expected to miss this year's return to Pirateland due to a shoulder separation. Several backs will take up the slack, including Brady Flores, Josh Hidalgo and Jeff LeBlanc. FS Troy Cooley was superior last week as PN-G took care of Beaumont Kelly 38-7 on homecoming night. Senior Tony Bowser draws his first starting nod at QB after recovering from a knee injury, while junior Kirk Hallmark makes his 2000 debut as a starter at split end.
· Pirates capsule: Costly foot injury to slick option QB Travis Maines in the Nederland loss has been a major factor in coach Jeff Mathews' Pirates 0-4 start. Maines has been gimpy in his movements at practice and has not been listed as a starter for tonight's game. Vidor outgained Bridge City in total yards, 343-271, and doubled BC in first downs, 18-9, but seven turnovers to none proved decisive in a 31-17 loss. Douglas Sims ran for 116 yards and Maines' replacement, Matt Wilson, threw for 102. Sims also was Vidor's receiving leader, catching four passes for 83 yards.
· Burnett says: "What's been hurting Vidor has been turnovers. They play hard and usually they play spirited games against the Indians. We know they will be fully prepared .... We had 31 points against Kelly by halftime and so we got to look at all our three quarterbacks. We needed a game like that to give us a shot of adrenalin. Our goal is to continue to get better and I feel this team is nowhere near where it's going to be. We intend to start (Tony) Bowser and play (Cody) Elkins at QB. Moving (Kirk) Hallmark gives us a good threat at wide receiver."
· Mathews says: "PN-G is not going to beat themselves. Their defense is going to fly to the ball, especially (Jared) Gary at end and those two inside linebackers, (Trayce) Boudoin and (Cody) Clark. I'm real impressed with their big tackles, 80 (Jeremy Davis) and 82 (Michael Brignac).... We're using our five pre-district games as a learning tool and we feel it should help us to play good competition like PN-G and Nederland. The big thing has been losing our quarterback. When you're running the Wishbone, the quarterback is going to be crucial. (Travis) Maines is our leader and he's been working in practice but he's still gimpy in his ability to move well."
