The Kitchen

Saturday evening roast in the power station kitchen!! This power station staffroom is at present rather Spartan, but here the addition of crockery and cutlery bought the same day at the local school gala day, has made things somewhat more comfortable. This photo was taken on 24 March 2001, a couple of hours after Engine 216 was finally restarted after repairs following the theft of its copper piping, and the day before two visiting groups were due. There was still much preparation work to be done, and what better time that at all hours of the night!!

The timber sheet was placed over the lower portion of the kitchen window some years ago after vandals smashed the glass. It now allows privacy from passers by - although the current glass is intact. The table top is possibly original, but probably the frame that holds it up is of more recent origin. Perhaps some day the floor will be blessed with a sheet of vinyl, but in the meantime it is ideally suited to the type of work that takes place within the building.

The kitchen following evening, photographed shortly after our dinner guests had departed and before the dishes had been done. The ongoing addition of the various 'comforts of home' make the building a great deal more welcoming to would-be working bee participants. The elderly microwave oven (and a few other kitchen bits) was bought this same day at the SPCA open day - thereby created the second important purpose of helping out our neighbours (the SPCA), who also desperately needed funds.
