The Switchboard between 1923 and 1936

This photo shows the steps in their original position within the power station's first two years of operation (as this photo appears in a 1925 souvenir booklet). This shows the downstairs interior wall at the right end of the photo as it was originally constructed before the British Polars were installed in 1936. At that time, sections of the wall were made 'open plan' to allow for the overall length of the new engine and alternator.

After the National engines were removed in 1953, the two ladders were separated and relocated to either end of the engine room. That they were moved after 1953 is indicated by the footing of one (at southern end) now resting on the foundation block of one of the Nationals. An interesting feature is the desk-like structure protruding from the balcony railing. This was used for the switchboard and engine log sheets.
