How do I get my Philips Nino to connect to the Internet?

The following question was posted in microsoft.public.windowsce:

I have a Philips Nino, and I have a problem connecting to my ISP. When I try to dial, it responds back with no carrier and no dialtone.

Kenneth Foreman posted the following response:

Before a Philips Nino can access the modem, you will need to install the Philips Nino Telephony Kit (According to Philip's web site the Philips Nino Telephony kit is for Europe only.) that came on the floppy disk with the modem. Windows CE appears to expect the modem on COM1, while the click-on softmodem that the Philips Nino uses is on COM4. You will need to run SETUP.EXE from the disk first, then select "Internal Modem on COM4:" from the Dial-Up Connection when you set up your ISP connection.

If you have done all this, make sure the telephone line you are using is an analog phone line. If you are attempting to connect from your ISP from the office, your modem might not work. This is because most companies use PBX lines to get the most out of their phone systems, which aren't compatible with analog modems. (Repeating to attempt to connect using an analog modem on a PBX line can actually damage your modem). You will need to ask your MIS/Networking/Whatever department on what type of phone line your company has.

If you are trying from home, your Philips Nino should recognize the analog phone line and attempt to dial after it detects the carrier tone. (Be sure you have "Wait for dial tone before dialing" checked in your Call Options tab for your Connection settings.

If everything is set correctly (you installed your modem software and you are sure you are using an analog phone line), you may have a more serious problem with your Nino or modem. Hope that helps, good luck!
