Tragedy of a Princess

A shy, soft-spoken kindergarten teacher
entered on a Prince's arm,
Just 20 years old, in all her beauty
we all saw in years to come.

It was the wedding of the century
now in the public eye
Millions watched around the world
as she became Princess Di.

She rarely spoke, but always smiled
in those early years back then
Happy at her husband's side
no public need to pretend.

A loving mother she became
with two boys of her own
Future king of England
the heir to the throne.

Then stepping out of Charles' shadow
so much more than just his wife
She became a much-loved woman
living such a public life.

She took on charities and good causes
a doting mother still
Visiting hospitals of AIDS patients
and children terminally ill.

And all the while she's scrutinized
as her marriage fell apart
Dissecting tidbits of her life
from the very start.

Thrust out of the palace and on her own
still in the public eye
Establish a normal life for her boys
no longer naive and shy.

Long after the publicised divorce
trying to find her ground
She's seen somewhere exotic with a man
photographed "playing around".

The media ruining her credibility
as a woman and a mother
Never allowed to live in peace
to live like any other.

Then finally she found someone
and the happiness she desired
But still she's criticised by the media
of which she has grown tired.

Then in the early hours yesterday morn
after dining with her friends
One final pursuit of photographers
brought it to a tragic end.

All over the news we heard them say
in the papers we have read
"Tragedy shocked the world today ~
Princess Diana is dead!"

In life they continued to hound her
they never let her be
In death they had pursued her ~
maybe now she'll rest in peace.

She entered our lives 16 years' ago
and her love she did impart ~
That image of Princess Diana;
forever Queen of people's hearts.

Dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana,
who was tragically killed on 31st August, 1997
