NIGHT HIKE
We will start at Rabat and finish in Rabat, with quite a good walk in between. This event will be cancelled in case of bad weather. Bring torches

Geological Walk                                                            

This long walk (about 6 km) on rough ground will take us along the coast between Wied iz-Zurrieq and Ghar Lapsi highlighting various geological features in the area.

The Round Towers of Malta                                      

We will tour at least two round towers, namely that at Ta’ Hlantun and Ta’ Gawhar. Our guest speaker will be archaeologist Ms. Elizabeth De Geatano, who has studied the Round Towers for her B.A. (archaeology) thesis.

Talk on “Late Medieval and Early modern Cave Settlements”

Mr Keith Buhagiar, a medieval archaeologist, will be giving us some insights into the fascinating aspects of how humans lived quite close to nature in past times…(Joint activity through courtesy of Nature Trust).

Site visit to Ghar il-Kbir followed by night hike.         

A walk to Ghar il-Kbir which is close to Buskett will be followed by a night hike (circular route). Allow till about 1am for hike. Dress warm and do not bring bright torches.(Joint activity through courtesy of Nature Trust).

ON A VOYAGE THROUGH GOZO ALONG THE TRAIL OF JEAN HOUEL

Meeting Place:- Saturday (10th May) at 10.15 am sharp near BOV branch - MGARR HARBOUR, Gozo (under the arches). Ferry times from Cirkewwa are at 8.15, 9.00, 9.45am. Latecomers may find us at Casa San Giuseppe.

Morning:- The Clockmaker’s Saltworks

The group will discuss Houel’s comment on the natural history of the three islands, St. Paul’s cave and the alabaster quarry, on the site containing the salt-pans.

Afternoon:- The Fungus Rock 

The group will discuss Houel’s description on the ancient statue beneath the castle and the Fungus rock.

Lecture: Jean Houel and Nineteenth century visitors to Gozo

Morning:- An Ancient building in Circular form and the Giants’ Tower**

The Gozo Stone Circle and the Ggantija temples are by now a favourite archaeological site in our itinerary in Gozo. During this visit we will focus on the contributions made by Jean Houel and nineteenth century visitors to these two sites.

We will also discuss these contributions in the light of modern archaeological inquiry and heritage management.

Visits will be led by the group's secretary (Dr. A Bugeja)

 

* some minor changes may be made due to unforeseen circumstances     **visit through the courtesy of the Curator of Gozo Museums

 Other activities:- During the stay other ad hoc activities may be organised according to weather, request or tiredness. These may include Sunday lunch at Tal-Maxokk, or it-Tokk.

Cost:- Adults Lm 6.50, Children (<13 years.) LM3.50. The price includes the tours, an overnight stay at the hostel, evening meal on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Sleeping is provided in a dormitory with a possibility to separate males and females. Kindly provide your own linen. Bring also a packed lunch for Saturday’s midday lunch. Transport to the sites will NOT be provided, so bring your own car or arrange with others who have one. Booking by postage to GAM, P.O. Box 31, Hamrun.
