Valleys
Wied il-Ghasri

Despite its small size Malta abounds with a good number of valleys. Most of these are the result of considerable water flow during the Quaternary geological period when Malta was still connected to Sicily. On the mainland the longer ones include Wied il-Kbir and Wied il-Ghasel system of valleys. A good number continue below sea level forming bays which are usually found on the northern sides of the islands. The Marsamxett and Grand Harbour are two of these 'valleys', while Wied il-Ghasri (see picture) is a spectacular example from the island of Gozo.
