North Carolina State Ballet History |
Our mission statement: The North Carolina State Ballet (NCSB) strives for perfection and a way to showcase the many talents found in the community while educating, inspiring, and enlightening the dancers as well as the public with a professional, aritistic quality. The NCSB seeks diversity in its artists as well as in its audiences. The ballet brings together a unique combination of artists: professionals from outside the region, regional professionals and nonprofessionals. NCSB seeks to maintain an atmosphere where people are free to create and experience, where excelent dance opportunities abound in a safe environment with a sense of respect, collaboration, and support amung all the participants. We accomplish this by providing performance oppertunities and educational outreach to our community. |
The NCSB was founded by John Lehman in 1968. Since then, it has grown to his conceptions of being a classical dance company as a result of the dedication of its dancers, the zeal of its directors, and the support of its community. Mr. Lehman has been a leader in the creation of full length ballets. In the second decade of the company, he revitalized the repetory reflecting the emergance of successful modern and jazz works as well as additional classics. Ms. Charlotte Blume, a resident of Fayetteville, would travel on the weekends to Raleigh to attend rehersals as a principal dancer for Mr. Lehman. He saw something in her that was extraordinary and, thanks to his visions in her, she became the artistic director of the NCSB. Under the direction of Ms. Blume, the NCSB puts on classical ballets including the Nutcraker annually. |
