My CyberPets!
This is my unicorn. Her name is Sapphire and I adopted her from the Unicorn Friendship Center. You can adopt your own unicorn there.
The reason why I adopted a unicorn is that you can't see unicorns in the real world. When an animal disappears completely from the face of the earth, it is extinct. Animals that are close to becoming extinct are called endangered animals. In fact, animals and insect species are disappearing off the face of the planet at an alarming rate...something like 75 species every day!
Just think about this for a moment. Every day, several kinds of life are completely wiped out. Totally gone. Neither you nor I will even get the chance to see one of these animals alive ever again.
That's 28,000 species of living things that are lost forever every year!! Can you believe it?!?
"Well, what can I do about it?" you ask. First, tell your friends what you know. Say, "Hey, did you know that during the twenty minutes I talked to you on the phone last night, one species of animal disappeared of the earth forever?" At least that will get other people thinking. Second, you can do your part by recycling and being environmentally responsible. That way, less of the animals' habitats will have to be destroyed in order to provide people with disposable goods. Third, you can get involved. There are lots of opportunities to give back to the environment, like community tree-planting, or participating in a salmon-fry project. If everyone does just a little bit, we can make the world a better place, not only for the animals, but for ourselves.
