Review
This
book, written before the 11th of September 2001, is prophetic
in its lucidity. It warns against the USA policy of training,
financing and otherwise assisting terrorist organisations even
when it seems to serve a short-term objective. Al-Qaeda is the
key example in this book, which shows how the US desire to turn
Afghanistan into Russia's Vietnam went horribly wrong. Bin Laden's
organisation, like Frankenstein's monster, soon grew out of the
control of its western masters and even turned against him. Cooley
warned that we had not seen the endgame yet, and proved to be
tragically correct. It is a shame this kind of warning is too
often ignored by policy makers, who are then surprised by the
consequences of their own actions.
