Esther was a beautiful Jewish girl raised by her cousin Mordecai. She was sent to live as part of the King of Persia's harem, and he, unaware that she was Jewish, made her his queen.
Cousin Mordecai, however, had gotten on the bad side of Haman, a mean and powerful man. Mordecai refused to bow to Haman, and so Haman, enraged, went to the King and told him that Jews are bad citizens who don't obey the laws and deserve to be killed. The King gave permission to Haman to do whatever was necesary.
In the meantime, Mordecai had persuaded Esther to talk to the King. She was scared, because a person could be executed for approaching the King without being summoned, but she fasted for three days and then went in. The King welcomed her, and when he learned the truth about Haman and his plot, the Jewish people were saved, and Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had set aside for Mordecai. |
